Soft mounting FC/motors
#16
(13-Mar-2017, 08:56 PM)JimmyLe813 Wrote: i've recently started soft mounting all my motors. i found that it helped with my raceflight builds so i started putting them on all my quads.

also oyvinla, when you did your initial testing, it looks like your motors weren't really producing a lot of vibration to begin with. i think maybe put a bent, or unbalanced prop on and then try the same test. see if the results changes.

Yes you are right, the motors were brand new rcx 2206 v2 motors with new cyclone props which for me have proven to be good balanced even with some small dents. Right now the quad is out of commission, as I don't like the flight characteristics of the underslung battery, but I'll see if I can do a tasting with a new build in the future

Vibrations are not going to be reduced anywhere near significantly unless and until the causes of those vibrations are reduced. Pilots of larger multirotors don't have the expectation of crashing that the FPV community have, so they spend the time balancing props and motors and use isolation mounts that separate the FC from any hard connection to the frame. Even this isn’t perfect, but it is where you must start if you’re taking vibration reduction seriously. Soft mounting on its own just isn’t going to cut it.

You are right of course, but imho most of the small props are balanced well enough... And difficult to balance any better, other than by trial & error & reading noise from either acc or gyro. Smile

hey, can we say how much the effect differs between a soft mounted FC and soft mounted Motors? which one is more effective?

From what I've seen from BB logs, soft-mounting motors seems to vary greatly from on e quad to the next.  Just about every before and after I've seen of soft-mounted flight controllers shows a huge difference (myself included), motors not so much.  I think it's just the fact that with FCs, it's easy to totally isolate it from the frame whereas with motors, nobody has come up with a totally free-floating design.  You can use orings, pads, etc. but bottom line is the motor mount screws are still going to make contact with the frame.  Plus even with Loctite, you still have to crank them down fairly tight, which kinda defeats the purpose.  That being said, I do have my motors soft-mounted with these

Theoretically, it's better to remove noise at its roots (motors) in order to prevent frame oscillations from start, but as RENOV8R points out, it's a bit more difficult to get it just right. Softmounting the fc is much easier and straight forward with those rubber standoffs. They take up a bit more space though than normal standoffs, and not every fc has enough space around the mounting holes either...

I'm using these standoffs from RMRC. if anything, they're slightly smaller in diameter than typical nylon hex standoffs.

Good to know, thx (sorry didn't check your link before answering)! The ones i used in my rage210 build thread were quite fat, at 1 corner of the FC i had to cut the standoff rubber a bit.

EDIT: Here's how i solved it for the motors on my rage240 build, it seemed to work very well so far. The arm holes were big enough to put some shrink tube on the screws, in order to prevent the screws from touching the frame directly.

Anyone tried soft mounting the motors with these yet? It would be interesting to see the result

Great idea, I'm definitely going to try this.

I have just got those in the mail and will install them soon. Problem is that I don’t have a black box so I can only share my impressions after my first flight.

If no BB, you can always take video with an HD camera mounted.  Oscillations that can't be felt by flying will show up on the video.
