I stumbled across this by accident, and due to being tired I left my brain elsewhere and was having a devil of a time trying to calibrate my esc's.
You see, I have my smoke stopper plugged into a test lipo all the time and use it when building the quads, but this time I left the smoke stopper lipo on the quad while trying to do esc calibrations and motor testing. Which was doing my head in as to why it would not work properly.
Then it dawned on me..I still had the smoke stopper plugged in.
So, the tip is.
Use a smoke stopper when building and testing, but when ready to do esc cals and motors testing (requiring more power), remove the smoke stopper..
