Slightly Crushed LiPo ok to use?
#1
I slightly crushed one of my LiPo's during a crash.

voltage on all cells seems to be ok (crash happened early in the flight)

Am I asking for trouble by using this battery?

The stock answer is no don't use it. The real life answer is does it have a sweet smell coming from it? Are the cells way out of balance? If no then charge in a safe spot and it will be fine. I've flown many many batteries like this with no issues.

Also, check the internal resistance with your charger. If it's more than 20 or so then it probably won't fly as well (according to the stuff I've read), if it's damaged you may be able to see in the numbers if one of the cells is very high. For example one time when I had a damaged / super puffed battery the IR on cell 4 was like 60 or so. between that and the crunchy shell from when the puffing went down I knew I needed to retire the battery.

Don't you just retire cell ??

Say you got few same brand capacity battery's with one cell damaged on each you could rebuild one from 2 off them in still have couple spare cells for future if damage again.

Just charge cells to storage and good to go.

Here what I do saves money. And keeps me in sky !!!

LiPos are not something I personally would be willing to DIY. Too much risk. I error heavily on the side of safe. Carl making modifications to a LiPo battery (aka potential fire bomb) doesn't sound like a safe idea to me. lol...

Check if the cell loses power over time... I had one cut open by a prop - it seemed to charge fine but it lost half the power in a day just sitting there. Not safe Wink

But i have other packs with small dents that still work fine.

me too... about half of my batteries have some sort of damage, but I've only had to get rid of one that wasn't DOA. None of the dents that I have are quite as bad as pictured but definitely they've taken some hits here and there.
