Simulator Help - Freerider & Liftoff
#1
Hey all!

First post on this forum, so hopefully I'm doing it in the right place.

It's not that I'm extremely new to multirotors per se, but I definitely suck at flying them.

I was decent with my Blade Nano QX 3D, so I upgraded to an Armattan CF258, and then from the wealth of knowledge on Oscar's blog, built a ZMR250 V2 last year. I took a little break because I felt fairly discouraged about flying, but now I'm determined to become a better pilot.

I've been using my DX6i to practice on FPV Freerider and Liftoff, but I'd say I can only make it through a couple gates before hitting the ground. I'm trying all different travel adj settings, D/R and expo, and that helps a bit, but overall the suck prevails. I can keep it in the air and fly around the map, but you'd think I drank an entire bottle of whiskey watching me. Wondering if anyone is using a DX6i and has reccomendations for settings? Those sims feel mechanically different, but I'm trying to adjust my TX accordingly. My X9D arrives tomorrow, so I have some extremely false hope that I'll become a better pilot with it.

Or should I just shut up and keep practicing?

Thanks!

I can get very good lap times in the simulators. From my experience, it just doesn't fly the same as it does in real life. Somehow something is off, I think those virtual quads are a lot more locked in than the real ones. There's also no wind turbulence. At the end of the day, it's better to charge those packs and work those flight hours in.

hello Smile welcome to the forum!

My advice is, set everything at default, that's a pretty good starting point... or ask someone who has experience to give you their settings, that they think is closer to reality.
Don't change settings just because it makes your flying easier, it won't benefit your flying learning!

Crashing is very normal, just keep working on it, go slow and don't give up. Don't spend too long on it either, maybe 30 mins a day is more than enough, you will see result in a weeks time Smile

I do still crash a lot after months of flying in Free rider Smile so it's not just you Smile

if you want i can get my settings sent to you tomorrow! just remind me Smile

Thanks guys!

I definitely don't want to set it up so it's unrealistic. I'll try to just go in blank and make minor adjustments, as the first time I tried it would yaw to the right to where it wasn't able to fly. Definitely not how my quads actually feels!

As soon as the snow melts I plan to go crash a bunch and get a better grasp on it.

Much appreciated!

I play liftoff with a DX6i and I have the rates on the medium setting at the moment. It is definitely different to real life without the wind and also the gravity seems slightly off, making the quad feel floaty.
Current quad: ZMR 250 / DYS SE2205 / Littlebee 20A ESCs / Drone Lab 1500 4S / Naze32 Rev5 / BF 2.7.1
FPV: Runcam Skyplus / Aomway 200mw VTX / Fatshark DomV1

Not sure if this will help or not, but try to really feel where you are and the geometry of where you're flying within the world of the sim. Reacting to the situation at the last minute doesn't work with gates and trees and stuff. Think ahead as much as possible and mentally model where the quad is heading in 3D space. This will help you to avoid overreacting and smooth out your inputs.

One specific trick for this is to look far into the distance to where you want to go. You will still see the close-up objects in your peripheral vision to avoid them. Race car drivers are trained to do this and I think good pilots do this too. Hope that's of some help!

I've spent 10 hours in Liftoff before I could make a full lap on Straw Bale race.
6 hours into the game I still could not make it through the first two gates (they require a left banked turn which I could not master at the moment).
12 hours - I can fly continuously on Straw Bale, average lap time around 35s, every once in a while I get distracted or too comfortable and crash :-)

Keep in mind that the distance to display and it's size highly affects your performance, try playing as near to the display as possible, or on a TV. The best way would be playing on your FPV goggles, if you have ones.

Exactly! Honestly I've forgot about this one myself. They say that the car heads towards where your eyes are pointed at, hence the car is controlled by your eyesight. That's why it is so necessary looking into the distance while driving a car, especially at high speeds.

Good advice! I will give that a shot. Funny enough, that's how I learned to drive at a young age. Never thought about applying it to the FPV world.

Thanks!

Wow, that's some serious time put into the sim! Seems to have worked though  Smile

I just got my Taranis today so I'm going to give it a shot with that, and try these tricks others have mentioned.
