Simonk to BLHeli?
#1
Was trying to update my ESC's today with the cleanflight method, until I remembered they're SimonK.

I think I can change the firmware, but it sounds like I'd have to desolder each one, solder on servo leads, and use my Turnigy USB linker tool?

Or is it not an option to change the FW at all?

Here are the ESCs - http://m.banggood.com/ZTW-Spider-Series-...46402.html

Good question.
SimonK bootloader let's you flash both FW.
Check the manual to see if they are programable through the signal wire.
If not, there's no school like the old school

When I got them if I remember correctly, I did update them with the USB linker to enable comp and oneshot, but I can't remember if it has the SimonK bootloader.

The manual doesn't even discuss those ESCs, so who knows.

I mean it flies fine, it's just that part of me that wants to update since updating is the thing to do in this hobby...

Updating is always fun.
Just try both options. I posted about this some days ago:

I wonder if I leave the +/- wires soldered to the PDB, and plug the battery into the quad, could I just desolder the signal wire and plug that into the USB linker. I could disconnect the servo plugs from the Naze also.

Hmmmmm how much stuff would I blow up.

The negative needs to be conected to whatever you are flashing with.
Signal needs a reference to ground.

Worked great. Used my USB linker and had to desolder signal and negative, but it didn't take that long.

PROBLEM!!

This is what they're doing now after calibration on Cleanflight. What have I done???

That chirping happens after calibration.

Check the post I put on my previous comment.

It's related to min command setting.

Calibrate, then see what motor does not chirp. Then in blheli check the values for that motor for min command and max comand. Copy that to the others.

Great, thank you! I'll check it out.

Guess I better plug the soldering iron back in.

All of the motors chirp, so it sounds like I'll have to mess with it to find the sweet spot. They sound so much more "robotic" on BLHeli.

So we're talking PPM min / max throttle setting in BLHeli suite?

EDIT: I tried this method and it seems to work well!

Is it just me or is there a crazy difference how locked in this thing is going to be with BLHeli instead of SimonK?

I put the props on and held it (safely) underneath and it feels more powerful and much more solid. Perhaps placebo.

You have no clue my friend, it's like the motors know what you want to do before you do it. Lol

Happy flying!
