Should I move to Betaflight from Cleanflight
#1
Just curious, is it worth it to go to Betaflight? I know this is like, old news, but I've recently got my mini flying, and want to know if I should make the switch or just ride out Cleanflight? What are the benefits?

Not being a racer and not wanting to keep track of versions, I use cleanflight. I hear about people frying ESC's and various crashes because of one bug or another. I don't need the extra bit of performance vs the risks and the time it takes to experiment.

look at it this way.. its called "beta" flight for a reason - it's developmental software that may or may not have bugs in the code. if you're ok with the risks, run it.. if you prefer stability then stick with cleanflight until the new features of betaflight are migrated in.

I disagree... If you fly Acro (rate) mode, then it's worth it! It'll have you flying like Steele lol.

For me, the biggest benefit of switching from cleanflight to betaflight was how much easier it became to get a build flying well. I've had several builds that flew great on betaflight default PID, no tuning needed. The others only needed minor tweaks to fly well. As someone that hates tuning, that alone made it worth it to me.

Betaflight is much easier for me tuning as well.
I've had all my quads running betaflight now, all well with very with minor adjustments. Coming from Openpilot it was like taking the training wheels off.

i love betaflight, i have just updated to 2.6.0  and its great,  Boris b  is working wonders with betaflight  . you may need to make a few changes to your settings  like changing min throttle to 1030 ish  etc  . i use pid 1 rewrite   and its great , used luxfloat for a bit but i prefer pid1 rewrite . i have used betaflight for months now  and had no problems .  if you use AIRMODE  make sure you can disable motors with a switch when you land  or it will bounce off the ground  as in AIRmode the quad thinks its in the AIR all the time .

I say try it and see what you think. Most it will cost you is a couple motors and a frame hehe. Seriously though, it's been an adventure for me. There have been some bugs that have popped up with my particular components, but to me that's half the fun. I've been a flash-aholic since I got my first OG droid phone, can't help it. And chasing the new features on betaflight scratches that itch as well. But most people, like those above, flash bf and have no problems and never turn back.

Is there really a reason to NOT use Betaflight on a mini quad? It's has a so much better flight experience with the default PIDs and it's easier PID tuning. I really love it!

I think the reason might be being betaflight is more likely to have bugs than clean flight which is hard for beginners to troubleshoot

that said, me being a beginner in this, I moved to Betaflight from CF and my quads fly better than ever - I never got them to fly as good with CF - the starting PID's etc are spot on for rewrite. I'm now actually going to try KISS FC on a new quad - but old ones stay at BF 2.5.4 - They are just solid for my flying style.

I think it is best to have a "favorite" build/tune of either firmware you like. Mine is Betaflight 2.1.6. That said, every so often, especially when the hype gets loud Smile, I take a quad from the fleet and flash the latest Betaflight / Raceflight etc. to evaluate. Sometimes the new features are buggy or odd, but sometimes it just feels "right". That is how I landed on 2.1.6. I'm about to give 2.6.x a try.

i am loving  2.6.0 at the moment  Smile  give it a go, what have you got to lose ,  just a quad or two  Wink

Hi all! I'm new to this forum but this question about Cleanflight versus Betaflight has been in the back of my mind too. I hear a lot of people talking highly about staying with Cleanflight and I hear some people talking highly about their experiences with Betaflight. Then I find this thread and I see the same thing. Many people are quite happy just staying with Cleanflight but there are those that experiment with Betaflight and they have great success, as well.

I'm hoping to try out Betaflight on my ZMR250 when my replacement motors get here. I'm not fond of tuning mostly because I don't understand what a lot of the settings are and I don't understand the PID's. If I can get Betaflight to simply get me in the air, I'd be quite happy and then maybe I can learn how to make positive PID adjustments.

Scratch built foamboard canard with 1.3ghz

Its as easy as making a backup of your Cleanflight config and trying it! The default pids have got my 210 and 250 flying great. I'm slowly doing some tuning, but it feels really locked in from the get go.
