Safety Video Compilation, you in?
#1
Hey guys,

Would any of you be interested in collaborating on a quad safety video that we could post to youtube and share? When I do a search for multirotor and quad safety not much comes up... drone safety seems to focus on DJI style photo platforms. For the race/freestyle quad community and for intofpv members especially.

Here is my thought on how we could do the video:

First we could collect a set of topics that we think would make sense to include in the video
Second we could hold a poll to pick which of the selected topics make it into the final video
Then we could post it up almost like a pot-luck and let people pick which sections of the video that they'd like to record each person could pick one topic first and then if there are topics left over we could do another round of volunteering until each of the topics are covered.

Then we give everyone a week or two to record their videos and send them to whomever is going to do the final edits and put everything together (I can do it but I am no video editing artist so I would definitely say it would be better if there is someone who is good with the edits to do that instead. Obviously it needs the intofpv intro!

Finally someone could share the video with links to intofpv and whatever websites each of the contributors would like linked in the description

If you guys like the idea share some potential topics, if you don't then let us know what we're not thinking of.

I'll get a list started and update it as topics are suggested. Mods, feel free to edit my post if I end up too slow along the way.
  • Always remove props before powering up quad inside / on workbench
  • Don't use motor_stop, even if you're tempted.
  • Set your failsafe based on your personal preferences (maybe some recommendations on soft landing or disarm. I've heard arguments for both)
  • Always know where your radio is when retrieving your quad. If in doubt take it with you. And don't accidentally arm your quad when its in someone else's hand!
  • Proper care and transport of lipos / fire safety
  • Don't fly over or at people
  • Don't land too close to people or yourself, especially without disabling air mode.
  • Join or at least follow the guidelines of a respected modelers club such as the AMA (To cover all the basics)
  • Always be safe when working with soldering irons.
  • Don't fly near airports and check your local/regional laws regarding RC flight and RF transmissions (such as 5.8GHz for FPV video)

Nice idea!

I'm not a video guy, so I'll pass, but maybe someone wants to do something similar to this video as an example of why you don't want a quad's propellers anywhere near you.

Good idea, but i fear i can't help much either.

@Carl, i especially like your last point about guidelines. Maybe we could extend that to actually list and explain the basic rules since there's many starting directly with fpv without previous knowledge...

Yeah, I am one of them. Smile

I found AMA early on because I have a friend who is into the camera platform quads who insisted that all FPV was always illegal outdoors now thanks to FAA and I wanted to find a way to prove him wrong. Since then I've needed the membership to join a local club and it seems you need it to race in multiGP/DRC events (at least in my area) which some day I do hope to do.

I'll need at least 2 or 3 other people who are willing to do some filming to make it collaborative. I am not enough of a expert to do it on my own... Also you dont have to star in the video you can use visuals and narrate (for example, someone could do what Unseen suggests above while explaining the dangers and alternatives to having props on while indoors) If you don't have the software to combine separate video and audio I can definitely do that part Smile

Nice idea, I'm probably not going to be a great help right now, just wanted to show support. I am quite likely to have a few oopsies along my path into fpv though, so as soon as I start loosing fingers I will be sure to post very graphic pics and vids!

Accidents happen... but they happen very rarely when practicing proper safety techniques. I know this especially from my racing days. Every event we went through a safety briefing and it wasn't just for the new people. Those of us with experience participated each time as well. It keeps things at the top of mind and in the end nearly eliminated issues during events.

Plus, you don't need to know all of the topics to help. Heck, if you're really worried about hitting on the right points maybe someone could write you a script that doesn't want to do the video portion!

Also maybe since this was inspired by a discussion on air-mode we should add landing within a certain distance of people. I had a close-call myself yesterday when I forgot to turn off air-mode came in for a landing, and my quad hopped up onto the bench next to me. Definitely a lesson learned! Topic added.

Check your Local Laws regarding RC flying in your country. Not everybody lives in the US [german here] also stay away from airports.
