Not a lot of thought going in to what they are doing...is this honestly Rotor Riot, or just some yahoos trying to be Rotor Riot?

Pretty sure those are RR pilots. This is Canada and like said, our regs don't apply to anything under 250 grams. These are responsible pilots and not breaking any laws, so I don't really think it's a problem. Plus the video is EPIC! (You can see the full video on YouTube). With that being said, I'm willing to bet those quads aren't really under 250 grams hahaha

I'd say that they are definitely not "responsible pilots".

First step in avoiding catastrophic crash is to no fly where crash can cause catastrophy.

They may be good pilots, but nobody protected from own mistake, hardware failure, or, whatever, bird?

That was pretty much my thinking when I saw the full video on the RR channel recently.

Just one little mistake, sudden gust of wind or a hardware failure could have sent the quad spinning out of control into the traffic on the bridge. That could have had very messy consequences.

Unfortunately, this kind of publicity stunt plays right into the hands of people who want to ban quadcopters from anywhere near people or property and make us all drive out into the middle of nowhere if we want to fly.

That was Rotor Riot, MattyStuntz was flying in that clip with some of the Rotor Riot crew. Le Drib released the vid called "my beef with mattystuntz" or something like that.

Honestly, I strongly suspect flying in places like this only hurts the hobby. There was another video of a guy flying on and in a freight train. Both videos, while cool, are only providing ammunition to get drone regulations more harsh in the future.

I also roadrace motorcycles and the safety regulations in that hobby make drone use seem like the wild west. If you go to any roadracing event and don't follow all the rules you will get kicked out at best. Not because they are mean fun killers, but because they want to be able to keep enjoying their hobby!

I believe responsible use means accounting for the possibility of hardware failure as well as other rare potential problems. By that criteria I would say there are a lot of irresponsible videos of drone flying on youtube. Sorry if I sound harsh, /rant.
Flying: Talon 6S 6" 2407s 381g no bat, Martian 3, 5" 2205s sooo heavy + gopro session 5 573g AUW, Aurora 5" 2205s 280g no bat, Druckbaer 3" 1404s 172g AUW 3S 550, BQE Megapixel 2.5" 1107s 139g AUW 3S 550, BabyHawk R 2.5" 164g AUW 3S 550 (stock except microeagle, CRSF, 2.5" arms) and maybe 3 more, for now...

McDee, this is how I feel about it. I applaud their talent and understand the time and effort they have invested to attain their level...but there are too many people just waiting for a catastrophe to bring in much harsher regulations.

That's not so important. What is important that there at least one little child waiting his (or her) father driving home from work. Father who can be killed in traffic accident just because someone wants to upload cool video to youtube.

Chances are small, yes, but responsibility is, among other, is to elliminate such chances.

Yet nobody cares about all the dji's and similar, flying everywhere, and over everything - mostly by "drone users" with near zero flying skill. Unless an accident actually has happened.

Here, nothing happened, yet everybody is upset. :/

Where did you get this idea? Are you suggesting the people in this thread who are negative towards mattystuntz flying in the posted video feel this way?

I'm not attacking you, just curios as this topic is obviously important to us all.

I think everyone should play by the rules... if the rules are stupid then they should fight it the legal way, not deliberately breaking them to express their anger.

What Rotor Riot did was bad, but perhaps some newbies with shiny DJI toys have done things just as bad but didn't get as much attention. I guess everyone gets so mad at RR because of expectation. RR sees themselves as the ambassador of the hobby, and they should act like one. It's unbelievably ironic what they say in the intro "You should follow the local regulation and fly safe" then the next minute you see them breaking the laws and flying irresponsibly.

They have a large following and it so easy for some silly people to copy what they do...

I suspect this behavior is much more prevalent then we realize. Most of the time you only hear about it is when something goes wrong, or someone just happens to see it. @fftunes is correct, nothing happened, but it easily COULD have. There are lots of places to do this kind of flying that are safe.....why pick a place with potential catastrophic results?

I didn't mean to support what rotor riot did in this episode, i'm not saying it's safe. But they didn't really fly over the street / traffic.

@McDee, i mean there's lots of stupid videos out there. Watch some Casey Neistat flying, he has millions of subscribers and rarely anyone cares when he's flying in the city... And i'm not suggesting anything. Aside from some people flying quads at airports (near starting/landing airplanes) i have not ever seen anything in the news like that unless really somebody was injured or killed.

@Oscar, yes you are right of course, they are giving a bad example of irresponsible flying here. But the same would apply for many many videos in the past by people like Steele and others, like all those building dives in the city, sometimes even at night... If we crucify rotor riot now for this video, then we're not really being honest but just jumping the hystery train, kind of.

What i'd like rotor riot to do for a future episode: test what amount of damage a 500g quad can actually do to a car windshield, in a worst case scenario. Think i should suggest that on their channel. Smile

That would be definitely interesting, but I don't think that quad alone can do a lot of damage to car. What can is that driver potentially be shocked by something dropped on windshield and do a mistake because of that, like losing control of car. Which, in turn, can have serious consequences.
