Reverse prop rotation?
#1
Hi all, first post here. Hope this is the correct place to ask...

I understand CC3D is a stone-age fc, but it's what I have to fool around with, so pls bear with me.

I'm trying out reversing motor & prop rotation so they spin away from the fpv camera.
Did all the esc reversing via BLheli (DYS xm20) and switch the props.
Did a test hover and of course, doesn't work. Quad spins around big time, no flipping over thank goodness.
Then realized that the yaw has to be reset in some way.
In BetaFlight it is yaw -1 with CLi input. I can't think of how to do "gyro reverse" on a CC3D.

So question is, how can I get the reverse prop orientation to work on a CC3D (LibrePilot)?
Or is that not an option for the old fc?

Thanks for reading.

You could flash the cc3d with betaflight. I would assume that it will fly much better as a result and you will also be able to easily change motor direction. There is tutorials on YouTube how to flash the cc3d. Smile

Yeah, that has in fact crossed my mind before. However, was put off by the fear of messing it up. Would feel crappy if I break something that doesn't require fixing in the first place.

Well, let's see if anyone has experience with situations like this. If it can't be done on Librepilot, then I'll have to take the jump into BetaFlight... with a really, really old CC3D.

No experience with librepilot, but you might take a look at this thread on Librepilot.org: https://forum.librepilot.org/index.php?topic=2067.0

His problem is a bit different (yaw is correct, but pitch and roll are backward), however it seems to me the solution would work similarly for you (just reverse yaw). Good luck!

(I have reversed prop direction on my latest built, but I also am using Betaflight...)

Thanks for the link, sloscotty, will definitely check it out.
So how do you like the prop direction switch so far?

Reading up on flashing BetaFlight to CC3D again, does looked like it isn't too difficult. So if Librepilot don't work here, then time to finally learn betaFlight.

If you do, i recommend using an older version of betaflight, i.e. 3.0.1 or 3.1.7, there's still issues with the unstable 3.2 release candidates.

You might also need to install an older version of the configurator for firmware versions older than 3.1.7.

Also i recommend getting an FTDI adapter for flashing betaflight on cc3d, this gets rid of the openpilot bootloader and makes handling the FC much easier - you won't have to power it externally anymore before connecting.

I'm not good enough to notice any difference in flight characteristics - but I might be cleaning a bit less grass off of my camera.  The only thing I worry about at all is forgetting that setting when I reflash in the future.  Since I plan on doing it with all of my new builds, hopefully it will become habit.

I've done a little research on reverse-prop setup and apparently the biggest benefit is the ability to escape easier from quad-eating trees

Now that's new. LOL.
My main reason for reversing is so the fpv camera doesn't get covered with dirt or what not, which in the long run is going to ruin the lens.
Other benefits are just added bonus, since I'm not racing.

@sloscotty,
If I managed to get it to work, yes it will be done to my other quads too. Seems to make good sense, so no harm having them reversed.
I'm doubtful a CC3D can accomplished that with OpenPilot or LibrePilot, so I'm looking at (reading up on) BetaFlight now.

@fftunes,
Thanks for the heads up.
Guess I'll have a few more things to Google for the next couple days. Better to be ready than to get stuck along the way.. Cry
