Recommended frame size for first micro quad
#1
Hi guys,

Once I bought ARF 250 kit from Hobbyking for learning purposes.
It runs just fine but I was thinking of reusing the parts from the kit (motors, ESC's, Naze32 rev6, and move it to a much smaller frame to have some fun  Big Grin

Question for you guys:
- What frame size (and model) would you recommend for FPV micro quad ?

indoor I prefer 'tiny whoop' style brushed quads Smile
You can build a brushless one, but they are simply much louder than brushed. but they are a lot more powerful and suitable for outdoor too. Brushed quad can't handle wind at all...
These are all around 60mm - 90mm size..

if you want even more power for outdoor flying, you can consider 3" quads like 120mm-150mm sizes..

I think the 1704 motors would be a little much for a "micro" quad (150mm and below).  If you want to reuse the components, and be small, I would look at frames designed for 4" props.  180 size comes to mind (a few 160's might handle 4" props - I have one, but it's out of production).  You have a lot of choices at the 180 size - any frame with a 3mm main plate would probably be fine.

Thanks for feedback sloscotty and Oscar.
For flying indoors I would prefer Whoopie type of frame and brushed motors.

Lets put it this way. What would be the minimum frame size to handle 1704 motors?
I believe I could use smaller props for those motors?

If these are the 1704-1900kV, I wouldn't go any smaller than a 4" prop  (maybe 4045 tri-blade).  There are several 160 size quads that will handle 4" props, and even some 150 size.  If you want inexpensive, you might try the Diatone ET 160 v1.0: http://www.banggood.com/Diatone-ET-160-V...95923.html

For more money, there's the Armattan Morphite X155: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...Frame.html  It's X-style and beefier.

There are several others - these are just examples for 4" prop-size.  Just be aware that with the 1900kV motors, you probably will not be happy with the performance on 4" props.  5" props would be better, but then you're back to larger quads (180 size and bigger).

Cheers!
