Spare motor and a servo tester.

Set servo tester to minimum pulse length.

Connect motor to ESC. Connect ESC to battery. Connect battery to 5V regulator. Connect 5V regulator to servo tester. Connect servo tester output to ESC signal input.

Turn knob on servo tester to increase pulse length.

Either watch motor start to spin or watch smoke rise from ESC.

Done!

Sad but true. I paid R510.00 (South African Rand)

R470.00 (38USD) - X4RSB
R40.00 (3USD) - Shipping

And that was from the cheapest supplier in SA. It's the price you pay for living at the edge of civilisation.

Hey X, it wouldn't have saved you anything, but just FYI -
GearBest have a shipping option called 'Priority Line' which will get here in a week or so, usually about $10-15 US.

Might be viable for a set of ESC's or motors. I bought me Mrs a Tablet from them, thought I would throw in a few hobby bits too, pleasantly surprised by the service, however in typical SA style when they phoned for an ID number, they didn't know what to do about me not having 1 (what to do with a UK passport number!?), and I had to give them my wife's. They also didn't mention that delivery would not take place until after the import duties had been paid, so I had to chase them to pay. Rolleyes

What we lay out in shipping we easily make up for in cheap beer!

New receiver arrived on Friday. I updated both the RX and TX firmware to the latest versions, installed and tested. The results are baffling to say the least.

I configured my TX to shout out the RSSI value continuously and placed it 10m away. (NOT in range test mode)

Plug in lipo:
TX:  "94db, 94db, 93db, 96db" etc.
Unplug lipo. Wait a few second. Plug in lipo:
TX: "63db, 67db, 62db, 63db" etc.
Unplug lipo. Wait a few second. Plug in lipo:
TX: 88db, 83db, 94db, 96db" etc.

This makes no sense to me. Every time I power the model my readings change, drastically.

I then took the model outside for a range test and things got even stranger. At about 15m my TX shouts "RSSI Low" (45db). Keep walking and it picks up again, hovering at 56-61 until about 45-50m where it hits RSSI Low and Critical. (as expected)

I decided there might just be interference at my 15m mark and took the model to an open field and flew the damn thing. 15m out "RSSI LOW", keep going and it picks up again. At 200m I ran out of field and had to turn around but still got 58db.

Thoughts?

Most likely you are seeing a practical demonstration of the Fresnel zone. (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_zone)

If your initial test at 10m was indoors, there will be all kinds of reflections that will mess things up, not just Fresnel zone effects.

I'm gravitating towards the same. If Ed still lived I bet he would have an answer for me.

For now, debugging continues.

And what was the final conclusion for the patient? .)

I'm thinking about buying the QX7 myself, I now use FlySky cheapo i6x - and as iforce2d tested on YT (great guy btw) he was able to go 2.2km with that cheab transmitter and default x6b receiver.

Are such ranges possible on original unmodified QX7? If so - which receiver is best?
