Raceflight one
#1
Hey guys it's been a while since I posted but here's my last video on raceflight one. If you haven't tried raceflight one you need it in your fpv life.
Enjoy and happy flying.

I'll try Raceflight One when they prove, through a truly independent code audit, that there is no GPL code used in Raceflight One.

All I've seen so far is hype and arrogance.

Unseen I don't get in all the arguments I don't even know what gpl is. All I know is I've used betaflight kiss and raceflight and now raceflight one and by far the easiest best flying right from the jump has been raceflight one. In my experience it's been the best to me.

Oh i already watched it twice Big Grin Heart

PS: GPL means the GNU General Public License that protects most open-source stuff from being sold by others, simply said. Wink

The GPL is the Gnu Public License. It's what lets people publish and re-use the source code to computer programs without breaking the law.

If the original MultiWii flight controller code had not been released under the GPL, then timecop would not have been able to create Baseflight from that code. Neither would hydra have been able to create Cleanflight from Baseflight and borisb would not have been able to create Betaflight from Cleanflight. The whole thing about the GPL is that you can only use code released under the GPL if you extend the same license to people who use what you made from what you got for free. You cannot close the door and say "this is mine now and I'm keeping it to myself".

The Raceflight guys broke the GPL when they started releasing binary only versions of Raceflight without making the source code available at the same time. When called out on this, their response was to delete the comments and eventually the whole discussion before grudgingly opening up their source code repository on Github. Now, with Raceflight One, they claim that every single line of code has been written from scratch and uses no source code whatsoever from any GPL licensed project.

This story is more than a little bit difficult to believe and when people have been caught cheating before, it's much harder to believe that they are telling the truth now. So far, the only suggestion they have made is to have Skitzo perform an audit of the code to confirm that it does not contain anything that it should not. Given that Skitzo himself is trying to make money from Raceflight, he is not an impartial party and not acceptable as an auditor.

Whether you personally care about this or not is your choice. If you use and promote Raceflight's code and products and it turns out that the Raceflight folks are still using other people's code in contravention of the license that allowed them access to it in the first place then you would be helping to line the pockets of people who don't care about anything else than making money for themselves.

I'm a sofware developer who makes his living writing code. I have previously released code under the GPL so that other people can use what I have written. It's always good to give back to the community which has helped me in the past. If I knew that someone was using my code which I released to benefit everyone in contravention of the license that I released it under, I'd be screaming bloody murder to the world and asking the Free Software Foundation to help me in taking legal action to force those people to stop using my code without following the rules.

All the progress we have made over the last five years in flight controller software has been because of the fact that the source code of the firmware has been available to everyone in the community to study, learn from, improve and spread the results to everyone. If people start doing underhanded things like stealing the work of other people and not sharing it, then flight controller software will just turn into a load of walled gardens. You won't have any choice about what you want to run on your flight controller and you won't be able to change it to make it work how you want. People who gave freely for the sake of the hobby will see greedy crooks getting fat while they get nothing. Innovation will stop and the only good software will be stuff you have to pay for. Closed software has a reputation for limiting the user's choice - just look at DJI and their mandatory no fly zones and altitude restrictions that you can't work around.

Anyway, if you want to stick your fingers in your ears and ignore the risk of making other people rich from ripping honest hobby developers off, go ahead. I'm not going to dictate and what you do with your own money is completely your business.

I won't be helping Raceflight in any way unless they are prepared to prove that they really have written everything from scratch without using anyone else's hard work that was freely given.

I share the same opinion on the topic of GPL and Raceflight. Also as a software developer, it sickens me that there will always be a crook who's willing to screw it up for everyone just for the sake of making a quick buck for themselves.

Off topic aside - nice flying PoorMan Smile

I've had concerns about KISS FC because I suspect their firmware also violates GPL. Anyone know if this is controversial or not?

I've not heard of any concerns with the KISS firmware. Seeing as borisb and Felix talk with each other and share ideas (not source), I think we'd know from borisb if he had any concerns. I can't imagine him and Felix having any kind of dialogue if there were issues.

Very nice flying too! Thumbs Up

Please don't feel that I was having a go at you specifically, I just think it's important that people are aware of the issues.
