A real, real classic: Rallye-Legend Ari Vatanen at Pikes Peak Hillclimb back in 1990.

Don't be mistaken by the low-quality thumbnail, this is a good little movie.  Cool

Absolutely! Nowadays it's all tarmac up to the very peak... still pretty impressive though.

However, my absolute all-time favourite motorsport is the classic world rallye championship.
I seen my share of footage but still catch myself laughing in disbelief while getting goosebumps. Big Grin

This is a good family-friendly montage (no crashes etc) with some impressive filming too.
Those guys really drive on the edge... drifting like this must feel a bit like flying. Smile

Great thread. I know from experience beating the crap out of Vettes on the course that small and light can outdo big muscle in the right scenario!

It's funny, I spent a brief time learning drift (I didn't really have the car for it though) and I always equated some of the feelings of flying to drifting. lol!

It's only virtual reality for me (mostly GranTourismo, TOCA/DTM and ColinMcRae/Dirt game series), but since i learned to fly turns a bit faster it seems that the way you have to control throttle can feel pretty similar. Smile

Digging through onboard vids... I vaguely remember Sardegna, been there as a kid once, it was beautiful:

So many blind corners! My fav style of pace notes. Single digits = gear for turn, double digits = distance to next.
Also know that the winner of this stage was even 14 seconds faster than the driver in this video... Exclamation

Finland is considered the fastest. Sometimes they DO fly - so many blind jumps!

Germany is also very fast - such a narrow strip of road to get grip from, and then those hairpin turns!

I agree. When coming in for a hard corner I even kind of think to myself "ok turn a bit early and let her slide around it" helps me corner tighter and faster by having the arse drifting out and keeping me in the trajectory I want.
Though while driving, generally, it's not faster (depending on the situation), but just plain sexy Tongue

Racing games have always been my favorite video games... and I would say that racing sims do teach you the right habits, especially GT which includes really good tutorials! While it's not quite the same as using an actual RC radio to practice flying... it still has a ton of value to work out concepts in a game like GT or Forza

On the road, the only reason it isn't faster is because of grip... that's why rally, such as the videos above, make a ton of sense to be turning ahead of time... an angle with 4 wheels of thrust pushing against the loose gravel is about as good as you're going to get with grip... much more like props that are pushing air around... or at least that is how it works in my head!

oh yes... and sexy as HELL! (sorry mods, I know this is my second or third time cussing today on the forum, but they aren't f-bombs :\ )

...unless the corner is simply too tight to be taken without breaking / braking loose lol Big Grin - some good examples in that german stage above.

It does make sense in some corners on FWD or AWD cars to get the rear end to break loose even on grippy pavement... that is true
