Questioning my choice of frame and ESCs
#1
Hey Guys,

As I wait for my shipment to come over across the planet I keep thinking about my selection of parts. 2 specific selections worry me the most.

The first one is the frame... I read or heard somewhere that the Martians are rip-offs of Aliens?... that's kind of messed up, and while I wouldn't be able to get my money back at this point the idea of something that is a half-baked copy concerns me. Had I known that this was the case I probably would have considered an alternative. Admittedly though it does look like an OK frame for he price so maybe I just say "shame on me" and still use it...

Thoughts on that one?

I bought 4-in-one ESCs which I am not worried about despite the warnings :p however, I am worried about 20a ESCs in an all in one board. I think I'd have the appetite for 20a ESCs if they were not sitting in the flight stack but now I feel nervous because I never really checked with anyone on my choice.

Does anyone think that I might run into any issues using these 20a ESCs with these motors considering that I fly pretty aggressively at times including going full throttle for as long as 10 seconds consistently (I have a big field that I fly in and I like pushing for speed sometimes) and more often in bursts of 3-5 seconds full throttle back to back? I don't have any issue on the Lumenier RX2206-11 2350Kv Motors with 20a ESCs.

I wouldn't be too worried about "clone" frames at this stage, in general I doubt there's much difference and from what I've seen the true parentage of various designs is a little sketchy anyway (although if you have the $$ and want a specific design then certainly buying it is the way to go)

I'll sound cavalier I'm sure, but what's the worst that happens if you smoke the 4-in-1? It needs to be replaced, that will cost more than a single ESC true, but beyond that? It sets fire to the flight stack? You have an epic crash and break the frame?

At the end of the day it's money, a little inconvenience and not much else. Second guessing yourself or your purchases isn't going to help Smile

Think about my UAVFutures build, I've had opportunity to buy "better" or neater options but I've stuck to the spirit of the build. I could easily find an alternative set of motors or ESCs, or frame or get a Runcam Swift etc but thats not what I wanted to do.

Stick to your plan, execute the plan and if it doesn't quite work out rebuild or update the plan and try again.

You'll be fine with a 20A ESC for those motors. Even on a static thrust test, they don't pull over 30A with 5" triblade props. See: http://www.miniquadtestbench.com/cobra-c...300kv.html

In real life, sustained current draw would be well under 20A at full throttle.

True... although I am now at a point where I need to start watching my money in this hobby... I'm easily busting past my couple-hundred-a-month budget. but then again that doesn't stop me from flying the crap out of my current quad and it's even more expensive to replace. So if I am willing to fly in risky spots now I should be willing to try parts out and see how it goes. Great advice!

Very helpful info unseen as always Smile

I managed to get the emotional and technical support on this one already and there are only 2 replies so far.

That's true, I have read some positive comments on it which is why I picked it.
