Question about signal strength and range
#1
Hi guys.

I have a couple of questions about the signal strength of my quad. Both video and rc signals.

I have built a volador vd5 dc with o3 air unit, radiomaster elrs rp1 receiver, radiomaster boxer, and goggles v2.

I use 150hz packet rate and dynamic power on the internal elrs module. Also I have installed the fcc hack on goggles v2 sd card.

I have set on my transmitter an rssi dbm alarm at -104dbm since the limit on 150hz is -112dbm.

I have been flying my quad the last few days on top of a hill and when I drop it lower and behind some trees I get rssi alarm and also the image in the goggles get really bad. I think I noticed the bitrate as low as 5Mbps.

I tried to fly the quad high to try how it behaves without obstructions. At around 500m I got rssi warnings again. The LQ dropped at around 80. And the video bit rate dropped at around 30Mbps.

I have to mention that I was inside my car when I was flying the quad. Could this be the reason that I have warnings at such short distance? Should I check something else?

Quite a few years ago now a guy enters the model shop I was in and bypassing previous customers starts a tirade at the owner about the useless rubbish he'd been sold, slamming the remains of a very very expensive glider on the counter.

The front end back to wing leading edge had survived, miraculously, though it had clearly had to be dug out of soft ground. I asked permission and he said I could look, so I opened the still taped shut overlapping canopy lid

1. It was an all carbon model

2. The aerials (two as 2.4GHz Futaba FASST) were fully inside that carbon skin.

3. Worse, they had been tightly loomed with cable ties aligned with and inside the bundled wiring loom. (And were not only buried, but were as a result not at the advised/desired 90 degrees angle to each other)

There are many reasons why a link is not adequate, and currently we don't have sighting to tell.

I know what a faraday cage is and that is why I thought about it...

Here is a photo of how my antennas are mounted.

antenna, both rc and video, should be high up and away from frame.

ELRS is not magic. Asking signal to go through car engine block and trees is a LOT.

Had a flight today. I turned dyn power off and set power output at 1w.
Stayed outside of the car and flew it over 1km away and the signal hardly fell at -80dbm. Video was solid too.

Then I saw that I had already consumed ~500mah and flew back... Big Grin
Battery runs down really fast... Big Grin

So I guess everything is fine!
