Possible to swap Hubsan H501S components with other mini mini quad components?
#1
The first quad that I ever purchased and exoerienced flight with was a Hubsan H501S Advanced. I have a few other quads now and I rarely fly the H501S. I was curious if anyone has tried or knows if it is possible to use some of the components in the H501S on my race quad. More specifically, if its possible or worth trying; I would like to put the GPS module in my mini quad. Not necessarily for the features like altitude/position hold but to have the ability to accurately see distances like altitude, range, as well as my speed. From what I understand, as long as it is wired properly, it should work just like any other gps module that one can buy unless there is some proprietary bullshit with it. I also do know that Hubsan uses its own proprietary 2.4ghz communication protocol but it wouldn't seem like that would make the data that the gps module outputs to the flight controller. I do not currently have an OSD, I use the Runcam Swift 2 for a voltage OSD. I will be buying a Micro MininOSD TeamKV MOD OSD module soon unless there is some other OSD that would work better without breaking the bank.

My mini quad was an EACHINE Wizard X220. I say was a Wizard X220 because not much is left from the original Wizard. I have either broken and replaced or upgraded most of the components. The current configuration is:

- OEM Wizard X220 Carbon Fiber Frame
- Matek Mini Power Hub PDB
- SP Racing F3 Flight Controller (ACRO Model)
- Flysky FS-X6B 2.4Ghz Receiver
- Runcam Swift 2 FPV Camera
- EACHINE TX526 Switchable VTX
- AOMWAY RHCP 5.6Ghz Antenna
- Racerstar RS30A v2 ESCs (Multishot)
- Racerstar BR2205 2309kV Motors
- DalProp Cyclone T5045C Props
- Runcam 3 HD Camera
- Multistar Racer 4S 1400mAh 65C LiPos

I know that my SP Racing F3 FC is compatible with the use of a GPS module but I have not been able to find really any info about the GPS module that is inside the H501S. More than likely it is a clone of another common GPS unit or Hubsan contracted a manufacturer of GPS units to provide them with the units they use in their quads. If this is the case, it would be alot more cost effective, even with proprietary flight controller software, to design the FC to interpret the common data type that the GPS module sends to the FC.

I am also curious if I can swap some of the components on the H501S for other common mini quad parts. It would be interesting if I could install a better FPV camera and maybe some slightly bigger ESCs and motors. I could care less about the 15-20 minute flight time it gets on its 2S lipos especially if I can toss some big ass motors and ESCs on it. It hardly has enough power to fly with a Runcam 3 strapped to it. Plus, I am used to the 3 to 4 min flight times I get on my Tiny Whoop and mini quad.

Any input, knowledge, or help figuring out if any of this is possible would be greatly appreciated.

I really wouldn't bother.

The plastic frame of the 501S is not going to like more powerful motors, even if you could fit them in. The ESCs certainly won't handle more powerful motors. Grafting the hardware from the 501S onto another frame might work, but would probably fly terribly as you would have no way of adjusting the Hubsan flight controller's PIDs to match the new frame and motors.

Pulling it apart just to get at the GPS seems a waste of a good quad. If you just want a GPS to fit to your racer to get some speed and distance data, there are very cheap mini GPS units you can get which will come with matching plugs for the SPRacing F3.

If the 501S is no longer something you find fun to fly, sell it and use the money to build a new quad or get new parts for the ones that you have.
