Piko BLX and MinimOSD Configuration
#1
Hi guys,

I am new to the hobby I have just finished my first 100mm build with the Piko BLX FC and a TX03 camera. It seems to fly ok and I am thinking to add OSD to it. I have seen Oscar's recommendation for the MinimOSD and am thinking to add it to my build.

The Piko BLX manual shows that the way to connect the MinimOSD is simply by connecting the 5V/Grd, UART1 RX and UART1 TX; the receiver and VTX would still be connected to the FC itself. However, on the MinimOSD manual it shows that the receiver and VTX should be connected to the MinimOSD instead. Which one is correct? Or would it work both ways?

If it is the latter, that it brings me to the next question: As many other users have pointed out, the "VTX wit LC filter" in the Piko BLX actually supplies lipo voltage, not regulated 5V. So in order to not fry my VTX I have connected my VTX camera to one of the two 5V/Grd on the Piko BLX. The other 5V/Grd is being used for my receiver. Now that all 5V/Grd on the Piko BLX are in use, how should I connect the MinimOSD? Will it share the same 5V/Grd with either my receiver or the VTX, or can I use the unused ESC +ve/-ve which seem to also supply 5V?

Thanks for all your help in advance!

So I've been reading up on the above while waiting for my Micro MinimOSD to arrive in my post. From what I have seen so far, everyone seems to be connecting everything directly to the MinimOSD, e.g. the RX, VTX, Camera, etc, some people even connect the lipo directly to it. My 2S lipo is connected to the Piko BLX and my 4-in-1 ESCs in parallel. Would the 2A BEC @ 5V from my Piko BLX be sufficient to power everything on the MinimOSD if they are connected via the 5V on the Piko? Many thanks!

You can connect 2 wires to one 5v pin, this is not a problem.

2A bec should be enough to power everything, just check if it's not overheating

Thank you so much for your reply KonradS! It definitely clears things up in my mind! Big Grin

I just have one more noob question while I have you. Do my VTX and Receiver need to be connected directly onto the MinimOSD for the OSD to work? If they remain on my Piko BLX flight controller will the OSD be able to display flight information? Thanks!

The MinimOSD will need the video signal to pass through so it can add the OSD to the image being transmitted. So camera connected to VideoIN and VTX to VideoOUT.

Thanks Snuffypot! I suspected that it might be the case, thank you so much for confirming it! Can I assume that the Receiver can remain on the flight controller instead of having to move it onto the MinimOSD?

I'm still very new to RC and FPV flying so may have some noob questions, but I really do appreciate all the help and support I'm getting from you all on this forum!  Big Grin

I've never used the MinimOSD, but from what I understand the only thing you connect from the RX is RSSI (signal strength) if your receiver has this functionality available and you wan't this information displayed.

Connect it like in this link, but no need to bother with the RSSI and battery voltage as that normally comes from the FC:

Thanks Oyvinla! Yeah I came across that post before, but I wasn't sure whether I needed to connect the lipo directly to the Micro MinimOSD as shown in Oscar's diagram.  Smile

So just to clarify, both my lipo and my FrSky XSR receiver can both stay on the FC, and the MinimOSD will still be able to read and display voltage and RSSI info?

Yes, you can set up lipo voltage and rssi in Betaflight/cleanflight and make sure the OSD is set up to read the values from the FC. The easiest way deal with the Micro Minimosd these days is flashing it with the latest MWOSD through the "new" MWOSD chrome gui.

Here is a nice way to get RSSI readings from an XSR connected with sbus:

I guess you already know, but if you don't, you'll need an FTDI adapter to flash the MWOSD Smile

Thanks so much for the info! Guess I should go get my hands on some FTDI adapter before my MinimOSD arrives! Big Grin

EDITED: This was bad info, you need FTDI to flash.... but still take a look at betaflight serial passtrough:

Btw that new mwosd chrome app makes things a lot easier Smile

Did they fix MWOSD so that it could be "flashed" via serialpassthrough? (Configuring yes - but flash?)

I really hope so as it is a PITA to flash it after it has been installed

That got me thinking how I flashed recently and couldn't... Just checked both mwosd app and arduino and it seems that it still is not possible Sad sorry for bad info
