To all the very helpful people I have to ignore the project for a week or two as the farm requires my urgent attention. I will be back as soon as possible so please be patient because I can't progress without your invaluable help.

Thanks guys, I have had time to think and decided to ditch the BeeRotor project as a failure for me. Based on research (reality thinking while driving a tractor around in ever decreasing circles) I have done over the last couple of weeks I think the best combo for me will be a : DJI, oh no, no, no I can't afford that, an Omnibus F3 flight controller and iNav firmware bolted into my old frame. I would be quite happy to listen to advice before spending the big bucks unlike last time when I believed an advertisement. Thanks for all the help, I learnt an awful lot had lots of fun/frustration so it has been a good journey. Finally to dragger201 I hope that this gives your murder mystery the twist you need to finally end up writing a happy story.

Isn't the beerotor FC an F3 too? In which case, i wouldn't see a reason to buy a new flight controller. You could still flash iNav on it... and actually the chip wouldn't even matter that much, stuff should still work even on F1 boards.


PS: Forgot to say, i only recently noticed, the roll/pitch acc trim can be changed in GUI, no need to go into CLI for that... my fault. Smile

I'm also using a RMRC Dodo with iNAV for my 600 mm drone, they have some pre set values for different kind of setups. I'm still busy with setting up it correctly but it works good. At the moment i'm upgrading my drone so i can't show you anything.

I thought in the beginning also i bought the wrong stuff, like the FC is normally used for a race setup, but i was still trying to get it right for other purpose. And yes i know it is sometimes a bit hard to find information for bigger drones then for racers. But with iNAV it's pretty easy to get a nice flying quad with "racing" parts.

I attempted to flash the BeeRotor F3 with iNav, but I have had no success. Reading indicates that one has to use Zadig to set it up but unfortunately I use an iMac so I dip out on that one. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

I don't know where you read that, but it's not correct.

Like many older F3 based boards, the BeeRotor F3 uses the CP2102 UART - USB bridge chip and does not implement DFU mode for flashing.

So, if your Mac is already able to talk to the BRF3 with the Betaflight configurator, then flashing with the iNav configurator should be as simple as:

With the BFR3 disconnected, load the iNav configurator, go to the firmware flasher and select the SP Racing F3 firmware.
Set 'Full Chip Erase', 'No Reboot Sequence' and set 'Manual Baud Rate' to 256000.
Hold down the boot button while you connect the USB cable and then click 'Flash Firmware'.

Done!

Thank you unseen. What you have written confirmed my thoughts as well. I should have saved the swear word combination form the BetaFlight episode, it worked then but the word order used the last 4 times must be different.  Cool

Your instructions are abbreviated compared to what iNav shows on screen but they make sense to me as the correct drivers are already installed so I will try them with out the magic phrase first.

unseen you are a genius, your instructions worked first time no naughty words needed. Naturally I will have to do a lot more reading/looking at videos to get the setup right but it is too dark now for any tests and who knows what the weather holds for us tomorrow.

Glad to hear it!

Flashing flight controllers and connecting to them is so much easier on Mac or Linux as they don't handle drivers and devices in the same brain dead way that Windows does. I've never had to install any third party drivers on my Linux powered computers to get them to flash either via DFU or a CP2102 bridge. All I needed to do was tell the udev daemon how to recognise them and how the corresponding device file should be created. Then tell the modem manager to leave these particular devices alone and not try to probe them and see if they have a modem attached.

That's a one time job and it doesn't forget what I tell it and start screwing things up every time I install updates.

I reckon at least half of all posts asking for help on RC forums are from people using Windows who are having problems getting it to recognise and configure their device drivers properly. With all the hundreds of millions of Windows installations out there, you'd think that Microsoft would have worked out how to make this work after all these years, but no. In fact, it seems to be getting worse with each release of Windows!

I'm looking forward to hearing how iNav works for you.

Test flight one with iNav:

The BeeRotorF3 is flashed with iNav Firmware iNav_1.7.0_SPRacingF3.hex. All values are the default values in iNavWeather condition were perfect and the test flight was brilliant. From take off the quad was rock steady and level.   Tongue  All the controls worked as expected may be a little soft, too much expo, around the centre but entirely controllable and easy to get used to the level of expo. I now feel it is worth progressing from stock standard to adding a GPS and getting all the GPS functions working, in fact am looking forward to the challenge. So thank you for all the help, don't worry I am sure I will need more as time progresses. Confused

That is great news!

Betaflight might be very good flight controller firmware for small, fast quads, but your experience clearly shows that it's not the best choice for larger craft.
