Picked up a copy of FPVFreeRider Recharged
#1
So I relented after sending my drone into a tree due to inability to control it properly. Big Grin

Picked up a copy of this since it will probably run on my old laptop (Liftoff and DRL definitely won't).  It works well and after 1.5 hrs of flight time I can actually fly around for 10 mins without crashing.  I only fly it in acro mode and have started to get the hang of flying and even tried a few power loops and split S.

Some weeks back i was looking at this sim and I came across a thread somewhere and didn't save it, with rates/settings that could be put into the sim to mimic a tiny whoop, specifically I think it was a Meteor75, which would be quite similar to what I fly.  I had a search on RCGroups and Reddit to no avail.  It wasn't on here either, AFAIK.  Has anyone who uses this sim seen any similar threads on in-game rates that give the feel of flying a whoop?

Good work on the tree crash Big Grin Did you get DVR footage? If you did then you can claim your Tree Hugger badge Big Grin

I'm afraid I can't help you on the FPV Freerider rates question.

Unfortunately I have no DVR on these cheap goggles. :/ TBH, I don't want that badge either, LOL. Had a look through the possible badges and I think when i do get a set of goggles with DVR, Whoopee will be the first one I apply for. Although I'm sure their will be plenty of tree crashes in my future, especially once I start doing stupid things around trees. Smile

I will keep looking for those rates for the simulator and when i find them will stick them in my whoop thread.

In the freerider community are some tips for tiny whoops: https://itch.io/t/175047/tiny-whoop-or-i...playground.

Thanks for that radla. I will try the settings for the Mobula7 as that is fairly similar to my Meteor85.

I hadn’t heard of this sim before (not that I’ve really done any research on sims).

I’ve been running velocidrone, but my outdated laptop can’t really handle it- I start getting serious lag and frame skipping.

Ima give freerider a try tonight, hopefully it’ll work for me. I’m not a big sim fan, but it’d be nice to try practicing some stuff on the ‘puter.

Edit- gave it a shot- yes! This is much more like actually flying than velocidrone on my laptop. It’s responsive enough for me to be doing the same kind of over correcting I do in real life, so maybe I can work on that in the sim. Gotta figure out how to set it to not freak out and reset every time I clip something though. Does this thing have a crash_recovery=on setting somewhere? Tongue

Depending on what you fly, drone wise, it's possible to tune the settings to make it feel more like a specific drone. I suspect the default settings are for something like a 5" drone. I have settings for a whoop on my drone thread. It might be possible to use it as a base for tuning for say a 2-3" drone.

I don't know how to disable the reset on crash thing. It might be a limitation of the sim. I have so far only really flown and not generally faffed around, but their might be a setting to switch it off or have it reset but hold position. I'm not sure if it's advanced enough to do turtle mode.

On the other thread, @brettbrandon posted his maps for Freerider. I haven't tried them yet.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v7i94sa...aYDHc/view

But I also picked up the extra maps pack (cost about £2) when I got the sim, which has I think 10 extra maps. Most of them are race maps and I don't have the skill yet to move like that. But 2 or 3 are freestyle bando type maps, but since I'm still at the keep the drone in the air and not crash level, also not useful yet. I have flown through them a couple of times. All in all for £10 you get a decent first sim and a bunch of maps, that will happily run on old tech. Newer sims seem to need fairly powerful (GTX 1060 and higher) Nvidia cards just to run. Most laptops don't have those, only gaming laptops.

Like you I am not really a sim guy, but it's cheaper than ramming the whoop into the ground when doing power loops and I can happily try dumb things in the sim like matty flipping (successfully) the treehouse on that map.

My only complaint is the high/low rates. I can't tell any difference between the two. I was hoping low rates would smooth the movement out a bit, but it still seems overly twitchy. So I just play on high rates.

I have spent alot of time with FPVFreeRider Recharged and I know of no way stop the crash reset.

Here is one of my settings that feels close to my 75mm to 85mm whoops.

Crap. I broke it. I went a little crazy with my sticks and now I’m just stuck in the clouds. Tongue

This thing is fun. Yeah, it’s not true to real life flights, but it’s not too far off after some fiddling with settings. I mean, minus the whole stuck in the clouds thing. And the whole I lightly clipped a thing so now it’s gonna crash and reset thing.

But, I’m able to try some tricks that I wouldn’t ever do in real life where I fly, and that is a definite win.

So I decided to try out Freerider Classic.  Bought it from itch.io for $5.  You only get 6 maps with it, but for the price, I do consider it worth it.  It comes with access to Windows, MacOS and Linux versions, unlike the Steam version.  You can't use custom maps on it, though.

So I bought it so i could run it on Linux and I didn't have the original version.  No other reason per se.  It runs fine on my Jumper T-Pro.  I used the settings below to get something similar to a tiny whoop feel.  it should run ok on fairly old hardware.

If you ever pick up the Recharged version, I have a bunch of custom maps I created for it... The recharged version is the sim I first learned to fly in.

This is the link for my custom maps download...

Thanks Brett, used Recharged for years but not previously found your files. Some good challenges there!

I already have Recharged, but on Steam, so I coudn't get the Linux version, since you have to get the itch.io version for that.  My main computer is Linux based.  So I grabbed Classic for Linux.  it's just something to randomly fly on and it means I don't have to boot my Windows Gaming system to fly the sim. Smile

Oh and I already grabbed your maps some months back.  Thanks.

The other reason was due to somehow ending up watching these JB Tutorial videos, which were funnily enough made on Freerider Classic.

My flying still leaves a lot to be desired, especially when turning so I thought i'd go back to basics and follow his tutorials and see if it helps at all. Smile

So I picked up a Radiomaster T8 Lite, not for the sim, but for testing my new C2 Flea Cinewhoop, which comes with FrSky (I will be adding ELRS to the drone as well). So it came today. I fired up Freerider to test it worked. It flies about 100x better than my Jumper in the sim.

Bear in mind this radio feels cheap (and it was very cheap), light, no real quality and has potentiometer gimbals to boot, but it flies so much better in Freerider. Probably going to buy another one for use in the sim. It's smooth. I think the reason is, the gamepad design is narrower than the Jumper. The Jumper is styled off the DJI, or it's probably a 100% copy of the DJI radio. This one is more like an XBox controller, so not as wide. Feels much better in the hand and the sticks are so much more smoother.

Go figure. Tongue

If you have a lot of time logged on your old Jumper, it could be that the pots in the gimbals are just worn out...
