Was in the basement trying to figure out why my OSD shows the battery voltage at 0 and I lost my video. Poof...gone. So in tracking down the problem I realized it was at the video connector going into the OSD...or so I thought.....further poking around revealed the issues shown in the attached photos. The entire pad lifted off the board. No idea why....I don't think I over heated it when I solder the pin on. Fixable? Opinions/comments please. : ) "Damn the torpedoes!!! Yes but fixing ripped off copper pads is going to be very hard.. You need to find the trace one the PCB and remove the silicon later to expose the copper, and solder directly on it....... Here is an example http://blog.oscarliang.net/repair-ripped...lder-pads/ For $5 I think it's easier to get a new one in... Or just use VBAT on your FC (if supported) • Posts: 1,290 Threads: 67 Likes Received: 713 in 473 posts Likes Given: 1,216 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 23 This is the pin for the video into the OSD, so without it I have no video unless I bypass the OSD altogether. I do have VBAT hooked up on the FC, and I am getting voltage on the Taranis, but it shows 0 on the OSD display. I wanted to do some flying this weekend and I will order another one, but it's not gonna be here in time to do me any good for the weekend. I'll give repairing it a shot....what have I go to lose? Thanks Oscar, I'll post back with the results of my attempt. "Damn the torpedoes!!! My 3rd one on my quad is acting up, and I'm pretty sure its because I had it zip tied too tight to the frame. Anyways, my next build will have a pdb with integrated osd for sure. • Posts: 1,290 Threads: 67 Likes Received: 713 in 473 posts Likes Given: 1,216 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 23 I don't know if the quality differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and if only one pad had lifted, I would have blamed me, but three?? I tend to think that there may have been some QA/QC issues wit h this one. Oh...well...three more on the way : ) "Damn the torpedoes!!! Much more resistant to breakage that way. I get the boards off ebay for $8. • Posts: 1,290 Threads: 67 Likes Received: 713 in 473 posts Likes Given: 1,216 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 23 (19-Apr-2016, 02:32 PM)flyandride Wrote: I solder wires directly to these OSD boards and only use pins for the FTDI adapter. I considered that, but if I'm not mistaken (and I may be), the board has to be disconnected from the circuitry in order to upgrade firmware or make configuration changes. Still, I don't suspect I would do that very often, so it may still be worth considering..... "Damn the torpedoes!!! Other wires, including video, RSSI and vbat - whatever You use shouldn't matter, so direct soldering is an option. • Posts: 1,290 Threads: 67 Likes Received: 713 in 473 posts Likes Given: 1,216 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 23 That is the way I had original set it up and then I soldered the pins to the pad thinking it would be easier, but I guess all the pushing/pulling/crashing just allowed more stress on the pads which was further amplified by the leverage exerted by the long pins. point taken, thank you. With the exception of the naze connections, I will solder the rest. : ) "Damn the torpedoes!!! These little guy are delicate that's for sure. Good to have a half dozen as spares...if you are me • Posts: 1,070 Threads: 70 Likes Received: 742 in 378 posts Likes Given: 577 Joined: Jan 2016 Reputation: 44 If You want to minimize wiring, You don't need more than one ground wire on this board. That's actually a good practice to avoid ground loops. Now You have 3 wires and 2 pins • Posts: 1,290 Threads: 67 Likes Received: 713 in 473 posts Likes Given: 1,216 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 23 (23-Apr-2016, 12:48 PM)Konrad Stepanajtys Wrote: If You want to minimize wiring, You don't need more than one ground wire on this board. Now You have 3 wires and 2 pins Ok....so there are actually three grounds on this board, one for video in, one for video out and one for voltage monitoring (vbat). I only need one of those.....does it matter which one I use? "Damn the torpedoes!!! Full speed ahead!!!" • |
