Original DJI FPV system vs. DJI 03 preference???
#1
For Christmas I upgraded my from 01 system to 03 and I am not that impressed. I was just wondering what other people thought? One of my biggest problems with the new system is the 03 Air Unit gets way too hot. I do live in Phoenix and for 6+ months out of the year it is over 90 degrees 24 hours a day. I have overheated my AU once and now I do not fly if it is over 90. Luckily I kept my original setup and fly it in the hot weather. I really do not see that much improvement over the original. Any thoughts???

I picked up an O3 unit to try, but after a few test flights its been pretty much sitting on the shelf. Some people love the O3, so I guess it will depend on your use case. For me the minuses, noticable latency at anything below 100fps, poor low light/back light imaging, fussy mounting to get props out of view and clean gyro, weight, and cost. The fpv image is prettier in the right lighting (and probably even better if you have the OLED 1080p goggles), better range/penetration, and the recorded 4k image is very nice quality and if you have it mounted well you get smooth stabilized footage, but much more flexibility using a Naked Gopro. I don't fly in hot enough weather to notice any overheating though.

I considered getting the DJI O3 system but I only have the V1 FPV goggles so it would have also meant getting new goggles, so I decided to just stick with the OG DJI FPV System and air units. Most people who fly the O3 system seem to rave about it, but unless you need onboard 4K recording which you can also stabilise in Gyroflow, a 1080p image to the goggles (assuming you have the G2 goggles), or you need a lot or range and penetration then there aren't many other benefits that I can see, and as mstc pointed out, some things such as the exposure can be worse depending on how and where you fly. I don't tend to publish my flight footage or fly long range, so I don't really need any of those features which means I find the OG system more than good enough for my needs, and it doesn't have some of the quirks or downsides that you get with the O3 system.

Regarding latency of the O3 system, Ian (Mads Tech) has a video coming out soon with some comprehensive test data from all of the retransmission digital FPV systems (so excluding HDZero) which has been done using a 1000fps camera to measure the latency. You may not be surprised to hear that the O3 system generally has a higher latency than the other retransmission digital systems, while the OG DJI FPV System (when using the V1 or V2 goggles) has the lowest latency. The O3 system also produces some other rather interesting latency results. You can watch Ian talk through his test setup and results where he also shows some nice bar graphs by clicking on the link below which is 25:14 into the live stream he did last Sunday...

Well, as for the range issue??? I do not see any difference. I fly pretty much the same routes with both systems and lose bars at the same distance. Maybe I don't push my system as far as other people, but for me range was never the issue. I kind of want to sell my system but know I cannot get close out of it as I put into it??? I would gladly get some V1 AU's and maybe some V2 goggles just again. As I said, the AU get's really hot here in Phoenix and that puts a damper on using it 6 months out of the year :-(
