Not enough UARTs?
#1
Hi all, pleased to meet you!

I'm pretty new to the hobby, having built my quad and flying on and off for about 3 months now. After my most recent flight led to me losing my receiver antenna entirely to one of my props, I decided to use this as an excuse to upgrade from my Flysky setup to a FrSky one. Consequently, I picked up an XSR receiver and a Taranis QX7 transmitter.

So where is my problem? I have an SP Racing F3 board (which lacks a virtual COM port). After having read up on how to connect telemetry, I realised that my receiver would need to make use of 2 UARTs! As I currently use UART 3 for a Micro Minim OSD, UART for USB and UART 2 would be for the SBUS on my receiver, I'm kind of stumped!

Am I able to share a port for any of the connections listed above? Or do I need a switch to just connect /disconnect the telemetry wire from UART 1 whenever I need to use USB? Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks.

If you connect your OSD to UART1 and provide power to the OSD from the ESC power rails, the OSD will not be powered up when you connect the USB cable and the port will then be free for you to talk to the board with the configurator. When you power the craft with the battery, the OSD is also powered and as you won't have the USB cable connected then, the OSD will be the only thing on UART1.

So, SBUS on UART3, SmartPort on UART2 and OSD on UART1. Problem solved!

Ah perfect! I'll just have to be careful if I'm configuring ESCs in that scenario then.

Thanks a huge amount, I'll solder it up tonight and let you know how it goes. Smile

It may be wise to make the connection so that you can unplug the OSD, just so you can address that particular scenario.

This is how I do it... make sure that its accessible as well. For example mine is in a spot where I can reach my needle nose pliers in and unplug and more importantly easily plug back in... I've had a couple of times that I forgot to reconnect it and my OSD said no connection and I was like "wait, what?"... then realized my mistake
