No low battery warning on Skyzone V2's???
#1
Ok.....So I am new to Goggles.  Just got my first pair (Skyzone V2's) a couple of weeks ago and I love 'em....until tonight.  I was zipping along through the trees and they just went completely dead.  No warning, nothing....just darkness. It's my fault really....I never saw anything in the limited documentation that there might be a low battery warning, but I just assumed (wrongly) that it would at least beep before it died.  Nope.  I find it hard to believe that they don't at least let you know when the battery is getting low.  I know I can plug a checker into the balance lead and keep track of it that way....that just seems kind of.....well...stupid.

All that said, I learned a lesion and it wont happen to me again.  They have a new version out that offers freq. scanning and other information (such as battery state) on the display....I wish they would offer a firmware upgrade for these that would allow these to do that.  It may be that the hardware wont support it on these ...who knows.

Ok...that's it....just needed to whine a little. Smile

I guess that must be what the "+" stands for on my Skyzones. I didn't realise that the older version don't have a battery monitor!

A LiPo checker in the balance connector sounds like a good solution, although most of the LiPo checkers I've seen that have an alarm have such a high volume that you'd probably have a heart attack when the alarm went off! Smile

does your battery have a balance lead? attach a voltage alarm to it Smile
but be careful, cover the alarm with tape, you don't want that to beep right next to your ear LOL

I cant help but remember my first time plugging a voltage alarm into a battery in my house. Everyone around jumped "wtf was that!?"... including the cat who gave me a dirty look.

I hadn't really thought about battery issues before but its a good point. I should see if my goggles (not skyzones) have something or not. I've never run past 1/2 power except the night that I killed a battery by not unplugging so I hadn't even considered it.

You must be going through a lot of quad batteries if you're able to kill a new goggles battery in a single session, or leaving them plugged in the whole time?

Unseen/Oscar - I did think about the lipo checker and the reason I hesitate doing it is because of how damn loud it would be...I may make something with a little lower volume.

Carl - It wasn't over the course of one session, it was several.  I had not charged it intentionally just because I wanted to see what it would do when it did run out of juice.  Apparently the goggles shut down at about 6 volts (I know, not good on the lipo).  I was flying on my own property so I knew that no one would get injured if it fell out of the sky because I couldn't see....which is what happened.  The only mistake I made was flying at night....it buried itself under a bunch of leaves and pinstraw  which made it very difficult to hear the beeper until I was almost on it and I couldn't see it in the dark, but I found it and all is well and now I know. Big Grin

Thanks guys!

Ah, well all is justified in the name of science! Big Grin

I hadn't really considered this and now I wonder if FS does the same thing or not. While mine rarely comes home even drained to a proper storage charge after 8 or more batteries I am not too worried about it, but it would be nice to know what the behavior is and if there are any safeguards.
