Newbie troubles

Hello. Glad to be a part of the forum. Very new to the hobby, but I am thoroughly enjoying it!! I recently bought all the parts to build a race drone.( Not to race, for sure) I just really wanted to see what makes these things work. Well, the build went pretty good and I had a small miracle getting betaflight to actually recognize my drone. Downloading all the drivers was a real pain. I bought a Taranis transmitter and for some reason, betaflight won't recognize it. I have the new FrSky X4R receiver and I'm not sure I connected it right. I wired it up using a single connection like the one used in the UAVfutures build video. I just don't understand which way to connect it. Could that have anything to do with betaflight not recognizing my transmitter or does it sound like I have some settings on betaflight incorrect? Btw, I have seen several videos on youtube, and tried different things but there are so many variables. Sorry to sound so ignorant, but any info would be awesome.

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum.

What flight controller are you using? Exactly how the receiver should be connected depends on the flight controller, as do the needed settings in Betaflight.

Betaflight doesn't care or know about your radio, only the receiver.

Hey Chris, welcome to IntoFPV!

In addition to info on the flight controller it might be helpful if you could get a picture of the flight controller and the receiver. This way we can check to see if it is wiring. It'll also help with Betaflight to Unseen's point. Different flight controllers put the receiver on different UARTs and stuff like that so knowing which one helps.

Thank you. Glad to be here. I have the Cleanflight SP Racing V1 M0F3. I can tell you this. I soldered my negative motor wires to the same place on the PDB as the negative signal wires out of the esc's. Then ran my white esc wires to channel 1-4 on the flight controller.( As described by Stu from UAVFutures video.) I'm still a little confused as to where on the receiver to put my connection. There are four options, right? The fourth channel has the SB connection. I knew I was bitting off more than I could chewSmile Thank you very much for taking time to help me.

Pictures will certainly help as I don't really know what a "Cleanflight SP Racing V1 M0F3" is.

Please let me know if these are too small. I had to change their size and I may have gone too small.

The pictures look good. If someone else hasn't answered by tomorrow, I will. Right now, it's way past bed time for me!

I think you would want to use SBUS with that setup, which means on the X4R you are connecting to the wrong pins. It should look something like this.

Flying: Talon 6S 6" 2407s 381g no bat, Martian 3, 5" 2205s sooo heavy + gopro session 5 573g AUW, Aurora 5" 2205s 280g no bat, Druckbaer 3" 1404s 172g AUW 3S 550, BQE Megapixel 2.5" 1107s 139g AUW 3S 550, BabyHawk R 2.5" 164g AUW 3S 550 (stock except microeagle, CRSF, 2.5" arms) and maybe 3 more, for now...

Thank you for trying to help me . I did try using the sbus with the exception of the green wire. Where on the SP Racing flight controller would I run the green wire to? [Image: sWSB1kg.png]

The example with the DoDo flight controller is connecting SBUS to UART3 RX and SmartPort to UART2 TX. You should use the same pins and ports on the SP Racing F3.

The full manual with connection details for the SP Racing F3 is here: http://seriouslypro.com/files/SPRacingF3...latest.pdf

hey Chris,

Just a side note in case it's not obvious in McDee's diagram those are the back or bottom set of pins. So on the labels you want white to SB, Red to + and black to -

And another side note.....On the off chance you haven't already thought of this, I noticed that the power leads that come into your PDB are not secured other then through the solder joints.  You might wanna think about providing some form of strain relief so that if the battery is jerked loose in a crash, it is not pulling on the solder joints.  You might get away with it....then again you might not.  Usually strapping it down with a zip tie to some portion of the frame is sufficient.
