New to FPV and need help
#1
Good morning everyone,

New to FPV and don't know much about it so I figured I would come ask some experts.  I am looking to use a FPV set up in maybe a non conventional way.  I would like to have a live camera and monitor set up to see hits on targets at extreme ranges, 2000 yards.  I have tried to make my own set up but it only transmitted roughly 400 yards.  I am not concerned about video quality, just want to see bullet impact.  Monitor size and resolution is not important. I am looking to find the cheapest set up that works well, my primary focus is on function not top of the line, but know there is always a balance.  I will always have a clear line of sight from transmitter to receiver. Also I will be in the middle of the desert so power will have to come from batteries. Also I have very little experience with FPV abbreviations or "FPV lingo".

So my question is there a kit out there and will achieve this or what parts will I need to achieve this? (I have no problem with some soldering)

Thank you in advance for you help and expertise,

Ryan

So to be clear, you just want to have a fixed camera aimed at the target with the ability to transmit the image back to a monitor where you're shooting from, no drone involved. Correct?

Hey RENOV8R,

Yes that is correct. I figured I would ask here because the technology used when people build drones could work.

Thanks

Oh, and do you just need to see the impact for rifle adjustment or do you also need to record for review later?

Hey Stacking, welcome to the forum.
You should be aware that signal strength on 5.8GHz frequency is regulated in the U.S, so legally you should have a HAM radio license for any VTX (Video transmitter) that outputs over 25mW, and you will need a lot more power than that on 5.8GHz to get the sort of range you're after!

You can use lower frequency (2.4 or 1.2GHz) for longer range applications but as most FPV pilots rarely fly out to this sort of range, solutions on these frequencies are a little more specialized and therefore do tend to be a bit more expensive.

Realistically if you have line of sight, and your VTX is at a fixed point, you could get/make very high gain directional antennas to minimize the power required to transmit that distance.

I have no experience with long range equipment though, so hopefully someone else will be able to give more specific info...

OK Thank you Tom, good to know.

RENOV8R, would be nice to record but not necessary.

Thanks
