It's all personal preference. I am personally a fan of Spektrum started with a DX6i and now my main tx is a DX8 and I love it. I have not ran into anything and been wishing that spektrum could do something it couldn't. You will be just fine with your Dx6.

I am a Spektrum user, i think their tx are built very solid in terms of hardware (case, gimbals ecc) satellite receivers are light and reliables, the software is easy and simple but limited in features and expensives. You will not find the same support on quad community since opentx is much more popular.
But anyway a dx6 is imho the best choice for a novice because it is simple, solid and six channels are enough for a quad to fly.
Sorry for my bad english

I'm happy with my dx6. I was surprised how much of a step forward it was, compared to the old dx6i. Smile

I have a DX6i sitting unloved in storage. It's not a bad radio, just rather large for my hands.

These days, I use Devo radios. One Devo 10 for when I need all the extra switches and pots and one modded Devo 7e because it's so tiny and takes up next to no space in a back pack.

Both are, of course, running DeviationTX and are modded with extra transceiver modules so that I can run FrSky and other protocols.

Hi Unseen, I wonder what you are using on these switches to fully use a 10 channels radio,
Here I have the radiolink AT9, and I don´t have anything else other than flight modes + arming motors.

What else could be done on a quad ? Leds ?

On my Tarot I use:
Channel 5 - flight modes
Channel 6 - kill switch
Channel 7 -RTH
Channel 8 - Camera tilt
Channel 9 - Camera pan
Channel 10 - Camera modes
Channel 11 - IOC, POI
Channel 12 - Rate adjustments

My standard model for a quad uses four switches and has one for arming, one for flight modes, one to enable black box and one to reset the flight timer. That uses all four of the switches on my Devo 7e.

It's when you have all the functions on a camera ship with a gimbal that all the other switches and pots come into play, just like RENOV8R listed.

Also, if you want to do things like in-flight PID adjustments, you need at least three more controls. One to select between pitch, roll and yaw, another to select between P, I and D and another to say 'increase' or 'decrease'.

Congrats! I hope you have a ton of fun in the hobby... just beware... it's addicting! Big Grin

I have been thinking about getting a spectrum for a second radio... specifically so that I can get some of the micros that don't support frsky protocols.

As for channels... I think a minimum of 7 for me.
4 for sticks
Arm/Disarm
Airmode (I disable accelerometer now a days so I don't have other modes really)
Blackbox

Then I have 2 more switches that aren't going to channels but are configured in my mixer for added arming safety. (Both most be switched full before the arm switch will work)... plus the nerd in me likes to have to flip a bunch of switches before I take off... lol

Get a Devo radio instead. If you flash it with DeviationTX, it'll talk Walkera, DSM2 and DSMX protocols with no hardware changes!

If you replace the radio board with a 4-in-1 module, it will talk just about every protocol you can imagine, including most protocols used by toy quads and helicopters.
On the Devos, DeviationTX runs these protocols natively, not over the PPM trainer port like the Taranis does. Therefore you get the full 12 channels and telemetry etc.

I'll definitely consider it. They seem reasonably priced too.
