New/replacement ESC not spinning motor
#1
Major frustrations before vacation. Decimated and ESC 12hrs before I left. No replacement on hand, no flying on vacation... Suck a bag of Poop

A zip-tie failed in a crash allowing my ESC to hit prop Sad
Pulling off the positive power wire and cap with it, separated the PCBs, lost some sort of chip lol, and another tiny capacitor. To be honest I could have repaired it if it weren't for the missing chip.

Anyways now I am home. Have a new ESC. Everything is installed but the Racerstar MS35A does not show up in bl_suite or spin the motor in BF. I have tried calibrating several times as well as triple checked all solder joints. Power is being applied, as I have checked with a multimeter and compared it to the rest of the other ESCs. Everything seems fine.

My questions: Is it just a bad ESC? And if so, is there a way to get it communicating? Or could it be the PWM it was connected to on the FC?

Maybe you damaged the header output on the FC when the ESC was ripped out? You might try soldering the signal to output 5 or 6 (if available) and then remap the motor output in Betaflight. (I haven't looked at this recently, but you usually did this in CLI. Joshua Bardwell had a good video on it - but things may have changed with more recent versions. Just Google "remap motors betaflight".) This assumes that your new ESC has no problems - if you are not sure, you can check it stand-alone with a servo tester.

I was remapping resources for my wing configuration, take a look at my comment here:

Find me on Youtube and Instagram. I currently fly: DRC Aura, NOX5R, Minimalist 112 and drive a scrap RC car

Identified my problem.  Thumbs Up When I removed the epoxy around the signal wires, I damaged a tiny capacitor.

Stole some from a scrap PCB and so far so good.... After a few mishaps, one of which popping my darn FC. Rowdy kids while using a multimeter... Wont happen again lol

Between this and fixing mosfets on Quadstyles QX90, my soldering game has been upped Wink

I HATE those MS series ESCs!

I made the mistake of buying them for my Armattan Hex. When I found that they'd epoxied those stupidly thick signal wires, the air in here was decidedly blue for some time afterwards. Angry

There was no way I could have fitted 12 of those wires on top of the flight controller and still get the top plate on, so I was forced to trim them all, solder on 30AWG extensions and shrink wrap each wire. I really wasn't a happy quad builder that evening.

I'll bet they thought it was a good idea at the time. Rolleyes

I like electrical tape on my ESCs. Not the prettiest or cleanest look, but less likely to fail compared to zip tie.

Right! I hate that super hard epoxy too. Any tricks for removing it in the future? Besides not buying the MS series again Tongue

There's no way to remove the glue that doesn't risk damaging the ESC. Removing it by physical means is out, as you already discovered, and I can't think of any chemical means that would only affect the glue.

I'd say that the "don't buy them" option is the best! Big Grin

I guess you decided to go with the first option Carl.  Tongue
Congrats!
