New pilots first quad frame
#1
Hi Folks.....

Need a little help help here.  First a little background.  Friend of mine came by the other day with his son (14 yrs old).  His son was interested in learning about quads.  So I showed him mine and explained all the components and what they do and ate that stuff up.  I could tell he was dying to try one so I grabbed a charged battery, a quad, and my transmitter and goggles and we went outside.  I flew it around a little while he was wearing the goggles and when I brought it back he was fixin to hand me the goggles, but I put the transmitter in his hand and told him he was going to try it.  At this point I need to say that he had already had some experience flying helicopters so he was somewhat familiar with the transmitter and it’s functions.  I was fully expecting him to flip it on take off, or immediately run into something.  Wrong.  He flew that thing better then I was flying after I was six months into it! I (and his father) were stunned.  Is there such a thing as being a natural at this?  If so, he’s it.  Popcorn

Ok…now to my question.  He is of course addicted and he asked me to review his parts list for his first build and for the most part, its fine……except for the frame.  He selected a ZMR 250, (clone I think) off of Ebay….that cost $12.00.  Ad claims it’s carbon fiber and for 12 bucks….well, I think I would stay away from it, let alone that it an obsolete frame.  I think his budget is somewhere around 50 – 100 bucks.  Anyone have any suggestions for a young up and coming pilots first quad frame?  I think he wants to do something in the 250 range, but I did tell him not to be married to that necessarily.  I sent him a few links to different sites and a couple of Oscars blogs, but I wanted to check with some folks that know more than I do (you guys).  Sorry for the long ramble…Thanks folks!!  Big Grin

DemonRC has a couple frames in that range. The NOX5R was my first "real" 5 inch build. Just yesterday I hit a tree head on @ probably 80mph. Snapped a steel shaft to my emax motor and flexed the carbon hard enough to chip the paint job down the entire length of 2 arms. I truely can not say enough for their carbon quality.
Check out my build log here for pictures of my other abuse I have given it. Wink (Haven't updated it since the crash yesterday)

I'm pretty happy with the SpaceOne 220X that I used in my Leftovers build.  Been crashing it quite a bit lately.  Lots of bumper protection space for the motors. 4.5mm base, 2mm top plate, metal standoffs, and lots of build room.  I'm not real fond of the website's constant fake "promotions" (50% off - but it's always been 50% off), but the frames are nice for $40 (and additional 5% off for first time buyers).

I know it's more than $17, but I realized after doing a lot of crashing that the best compromise is to have aluminium in the front. There's a lot of frames out there now that you can choose from. At the moment, this is my favourite frame:

I got the unibody (race version) This frame is great, specially for one of those AIO builds. Carbon is good, nothing broke on it so far.

Hey there T-Goat!  Thanks for the suggestion!  I agree.....aluminum is probably the up and coming thing....at least on the crash prone areas.  I can see right now that my friends son is not going to be the only get a new frame(s)  Big Grin Lots of really good suggestions here!!

Hey Sirdude, I just had a thought, I know that it has had pretty crappy reviews as a whole, and please don't take this as a suggestion for a 1st quad, but the V-tail 210 RTF is $160 plus the 20% off coupon, brings this down to under $130.

just think of it as a 'Ready To Disassemble!'
I'm not sure if the GPS FC would be usable on a different frame but even without it's not a bad package

4 x Emax red bottom 2205 2300KV $46.99
4 x 20A ESC $28
1 x 1500mAh 4s battery & charsoon 2s-4s 30W charger $30
1080p 60FPS HD DVR & FPV camera $45
200mW 5.8g VTX ~$20

plus the eachine clone of the FS-i6 TX and 6 channel RX ~$50

total $219.99, saved almost $100!

Thanks Tom...It is probably a little advanced for my sons friend at this point, but we'll keep it in mind......he may like it after he's gotten a couple of builds under his belt.

I'm sorry, this being my 1st post and all, but nobody should get the Eachine 210 v-tail, unless they're scavenging it for the parts. I was researching for my 1st quad purchase, and all the videos/posts I saw warned to stay away; high v-tail breakages, poorly setup electronics, etc. Albert Kim has a good 3-part review on this model starting with

Me, I bought a Wizard 220 to practice on, in addition to the sims, in preparation for an Armattan Chameleon that I also ordered. Wink
