Nazgul5, iFlight ESC BLHeli_S and RPM Filtering
#1
Hi guys

After a long study about RPM Filtering, Firmwares required for BLHeli_S to enable it, and so on... I put my hands on my Nazgul5, I flashed the original Betaflight firmware 4.2.0 with its CLI Factory settings and, since the ESC are BLHeli_S, I was expecting to find Bidirectional DSHOT grayed out or at least disabled.... but no, it was enabled and RPM filtering was enabled too and properly configured.

I checked the firmware of the ESC... it was BLHeli 16.9.

How is it possible ? As far as I know it needs a JESC firmware or Jazzmaverick to properly run this functions...

There is no version 16.9 of BLHeli_S but there is for BLHeli_M (the Jazz Maverick version). It therefore looks like iFlight are pre-installing the Jazz Maverick version of the firmware on their ESC boards.

Got it!

Otherwise there would be no eplanation for that...

However... Is it ok to stay with Jazz Maverick or there is any advantage in using JESC ?

It depends. There was a falling out between Jazz Maverick and the Betaflight developers because they didn't like the direction he was going in with his firmware and they even went as far as to make a statement that any version of the Jazz Maverick firmware after 16.73 wasn't compatible with Betaflight. However people appear to have been running it with no issues. So it's really up to you.

The latest version of BLHeli_S (I believe 16.71) is supposed to include support for bi-directional DSHOT. Thet version is apparently BLHeli_S 16.7 with the changes from the Jazz Maverick 16.73 merged into it, but I can't verify that.

If you decide to go with the JESC firmware you will have to pay a license fee per ESC.

Thanks Snow! As we said in Italy, never change a winning team... as long as it works I won't update it.

As mentined earier in this thread, I'm led to believe that the latest version of BLHeli_S (16.71) has bi-directional DSHOT / RPM filtering included. So just flash that version and give it a try.
