Well I bit the bullet and have played Cheapskate some more and bought at the Banggood Birthday Sale.

What did I buy?

A Tx/Rx Combo!

http://www.banggood.com/Flysky-FS-i6S-2_...24018.html

I'm under no illusion that it's going to be anything like a Taranis, but it looks cool, is cheap (AUD67 delivered) and will hopefully get me in the air soon.

The Flysky radios are surprisingly good. I tried a friend's radio and the gimbals felt really smooth.
Current quad: ZMR 250 / DYS SE2205 / Littlebee 20A ESCs / Drone Lab 1500 4S / Naze32 Rev5 / BF 2.7.1

I fly with the FlySky FS-i6 and I love it. The gimbals are super smooth and it works wonderfully. The only downside is that you can't use any other RX with it aside from the Flysky ones. Basically you wont be building a tiny whoop any time soon. Other than that, its an awesome TX.

It's not like you could use any other receivers with the Taranis either other than the FrSky ones.
Most transmitters require receivers from the same brand.

I'm glad to hear that the FlySky has some credibility Smile

I'm not to worried about being "locked in" to FlySky at the moment, I really just need to get my little bus assembled, strap on my GoPro and start learning to crash gracefully.

I think unlike many others I'm going to end up building bigger not smaller so just maybe the 10ch RX to control some additional function will be all I end up needing for a while.

Bought some other stuff a few weeks ago so it's really time to sit down and write a bigger better update Smile

Aaron when bying flysky f6 just ensure you will get the right RX
http://www.banggood.com/Flysky-2_4G-6CH-...78603.html
not the "A" version "FS-iA6", FS-iA6B will have PPM/iBUS and you will have more options to evolve it.

im flying this radio and so far i don't feel limited, so far my skill are not reaching beyond this radio Smile
so for starters it is really great value for the money Smile
+ you can mod it Wink 10 channels + custom beeps Smile

so the pack i'd recommend http://www.banggood.com/FlySky-FS-i6-2_4...83537.html
All the best

It flies!

And while the quad itself seems to exhibit stable controllable flight I certainly cant exhibit stable control of flight.

Oh and I think for the size of it I have too much motor and prop (Diatone 3 blade 5045s on EMax 2204 2300kvs)... Seems to be able to sod off in the distance at an extraordinary rate..

Ohhh and flying into my arm wasn't that painful, until about 30 minutes after the event... Haven't bled this much in years Smile

Congrats on the flight!  Sorry about your mishap - hopefully you will be able to consider it a (one-time) "bonding" event!  Smile

It's all smiles and laughs about it. So far I don't think I've managed a total of 10 minutes air time. Just teething problems and teaching myself how to fly at the some time as cross-winds are stealing it away from me etc...

Will get there though.

It's taken a few weeks to sit down and cut the ~1minute of flying time into a couple of Youtube clips Smile

Those of you with a keen eye will see part of my problem (asides from lack of talent!)

Hi Aaron i can see that you are starting with advanced stuff in los Smile (ambitious but you can make your life a bit easier)

look here, painless360 did this like 2 years ago but it is very relevant all the time...
basically baby steps, when you feel comfortable with one... next will kick you in the back ... yet this is very efficient Smile

All the best

I'm writing this after going through I guess a fairly standard range of emotions.  From sheer rage that I couldn't get my head around "flight" to the calm sense of slowly plodding in the "right direction"

So what was the magic?

Well for a start the KK2.1.5 with Steveis is actually a really nice stable F/C with absolutely no bells and whistles.  It (as the previous videos showed) gave level stable flight although the drift in the breeze was horrendous.

My biggest problem ended up being Stick Scaling.
Thanks to my setup being a little on the heaps of thrust side of the fence even the slightest twitch on the sticks was sending my off into the scenery.

So I switched from the 3-blade 5045 props to Gemfan 5030 2-blades.  That helped.

Then I started reducing the stick scaling.  From the default of "30" I ended up down in the single digits with 3 being where I "started" to get sustained control.  Slowly I incremented this up to the point where I felt I was able to control the quad and not drive it into the nearest solid object with unerring accuracy,

All the time I also struggled with controlling height so the stick scaling on throttle went way down as well, and I tweaked the TX so that 50% was pretty much a hover (depending on battery charge level)

All of this was done while smashing those Gemfan props into pieces, grinding my motors up against concrete and watching my neat and tidy build turn into a rough looking hack.  The grafting of a different PDB under the frame to run LEDs on the arms was worth it, I could easily track orientation in flight and that also improved it.

But to be honest while I got to the point where I could fly in a box, and understand the basics of controlling the quad it wasn't "fun".

And then I went back to the drawing board
If you've read the blog posts I actually had bought a APM 2.5 Flight control in the form of a HKPilot Mini at the same sale that started this.  I had always intended to build this onto "my next quad" once I'd worked out flying and generally gotten past the breaking things phase.

However I wasn't having fun, my wife had started to joke about my propeller breaking and blood letting attempts to fly and everyone else was buying AUD$650 Phantom3's or AUD$1800 Mavics and here was me without a spare cent to rub together and no flight happening.

So I figured I had nothing to lose.

I pulled up the KK2.1.5 and drilled some holes and mounted the HKPilot on some long standoffs (rotated 90 degrees to suit my ESC wiring), made a small platform above it and stuck down the GP module and started learning Mission Planner.

And this is the result!

After a few short flights working out compass correction (because of my rotated assembly) and minor things like the different motor orientation to the KK I finally took myself to a local park where I could really give it a go..

Success.

I cannot believe just how awesome it felt to activate "Loiter" and "Alt" hold from the TX (I have the Flysky setup accessing all 6 flight modes) and then the super cool "RTL".  Ohhhh yes!

Managed over 8 minutes of continuous basic flight manoeuvres, mostly me nudging around a hover etc and some more enthusiastic straight line work.  Minor hiccup as it browned out and crashed during landing.
