So now that we are flying FPV, I'm spending most of my time fixing the quad and getting pretty good at at. On that note, I decided with our down time, while waiting for parts all the time, we would start building our first quad. I'm getting good at soldering and Tyler is actually learning to solder too. So here's what we've selected thus far. We are learning so I wanted to put this out to the group and see what you guys think. I've been learning so much from all of you, so please make any recommendations or observations. For the same price, the AXii are very good: http://www.getfpv.com/lumenier-axii-5-8g...-rhcp.html. For a lot less money the Aomway Shorts are good: http://www.getfpv.com/aomway-short-5-8gh...-rhcp.html That's the first time I've seen that frame, so I don't know, but I might go with something more "popular". I have a SpaceOne 220X that I like more and more all the time (4.5mm main plate, 2mm top plate). He's got them for 29.99 currently. But others might have better recommendations. • Posts: 12,099 Threads: 125 Likes Received: 3,738 in 2,835 posts Likes Given: 99 Joined: Feb 2017 Reputation: 388 I wouldn't go with the X8R. Made that mistake on my first build. It is too big and expensive. You will likely be using SBUS and S.Port. I would go with no pin X4Rsb, XSR or XSR-M. O.k. sloscotty, I went with the SpaceOne X220. Seems like a rock. Which is what I need! I just need a PDB. Which PDB did you find? I'm staying with the Betaflight F3 FC. The Betaflight F3 is an all-in-one - it has a built-in PDB. Looking forward to seeing your first build come together! • Posts: 72 Threads: 2 Likes Received: 32 in 22 posts Likes Given: 1 Joined: Jun 2017 Reputation: 0 Maybe look into pagoda antennas. Cheap as beans and perform great, just make sure to get some which has some sort of protection. • Posts: 29 Threads: 4 Likes Received: 30 in 11 posts Likes Given: 26 Joined: Jul 2017 Reputation: 5 O.k... thanks for all the tips guys! Mostly all the parts are in and I started the build. As I laid out the motors and the esc's for soldering, I put a screw in each motor to hold them snug while soldering. My question is ---- even only one screw, loosely tightened, seems to make the motor very tough to move. I then tried putting in all 4 screws to see what that does and it barely moves just using my fingers to turn it. I used m3 screws (the short ones) that came with the motors. Seems strange that they are so tight. Any thoughts? Also, I'm contemplating motor guards on the SpaceOne 220x. Did any of you get motor guards for those? I'm using the emax 2205's (red bottoms). • Posts: 1,590 Threads: 89 Likes Received: 1,283 in 768 posts Likes Given: 1,274 Joined: Jan 2017 Reputation: 31 but the motors spin fine without the screws in? that is odd... considering the construction of a motor the bell housing shouldn't be impeded by the screws. The big issue with screw length is in touching the stator. carl.vegas Current Quads: Operational: Diatone GT2 200 In need of repair: Bumble Bee, tehStein, Slightly modified Vortex 250 • Posts: 29 Threads: 4 Likes Received: 30 in 11 posts Likes Given: 26 Joined: Jul 2017 Reputation: 5 Yup. Moves nice and easy when not screwed in, but very tight when mounted. Crazy? It's the Emax 2205's. • Posts: 2,416 Threads: 51 Likes Received: 1,861 in 1,175 posts Likes Given: 3,315 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 74 Is the hole in the center of the motor mount large enough to clear the clip, etc, on the bottom of the motor? I got the ones for the 2205's, so that should give me enough space. If it's not one thing..... what a learning curve! I got the ones for the 2205's, so that should give me enough space. If it's not one thing..... what a learning curve! Well, it's not your fault. The frame maker changed the design since I bought my frame. In the photos below, the one on the top is the original design (the one I have), and the one on the bottom is the new design. I'm not sure why he did that - very poor choice on his part, if you ask me. With that bolt on the bottom of the Emax, I'm not sure a even a soft mount will provide enough clearance. You might have to drill out that center hole (not safe or easy without a drill press and clamps - and safety glasses and face mask). Hopefully the bolt head will fit in that hole and the soft mount will help clear the shoulder (washer?) on the bolt. Let us know (and complain to Spaceone!). I had to learn the difficulty of increasing the size of a hole on a carbon fiber frame the hard way when making a hole bigger for an FPV antenna... definitely not easy or safe! (I had never tried drilling carbon fiber before). Luckily I didn't get hurt but still it was a pretty frustrating exercise, even just on a 2mm top plate... I can't imagine what it would be like with a 4mm arm. carl.vegas Current Quads: Operational: Diatone GT2 200 In need of repair: Bumble Bee, tehStein, Slightly modified Vortex 250 |
