Moving from Hitfilm Express to Davinci Resolve
#1
Because Resolve is better than Hitfilm I have decided to change to Resolve.  But since they are pretty much completely different, I'm suffering from the old adage, "can't teach an old dog new tricks".  The learning curve is pretty steep.  Hopefully I will be happy at the end.

Food for thought for you up and coming videographers.  Pick a really good video editing program and stick with it.  I went with Hitfilm Express because it was easy to learn and was free.  Resolve is free as well, but not as easy to learn and unlearn Hitfilm.

Hi John
Why did you give up on Hit Film ?
I just started using it. I had been using Windows Live movie maker and wanted something better. I have only used Hitfilm a couple of times so far. Are you saying I should bail now and move to resolve ?

I would be interested in why you bailed.

Scott, HFE is a good program.  It does most basic things one might need for video development.  DR has more effects, etc than HFE.  But the biggest reason for me to change to DR is the stabilization portion of the program.  HFE has stabilization but it is more time consuming to use and not as effective as DR.

As Sugs pointed out in my video Chasing Shadows I had some micro twitches in the video.  That kind of stuff makes me nuts.  So, after watching some YT videos I'm hopeful DR will be the fix.  Time will tell.

I could just get a Hero7/8 with Hypersmooth, but that would mean sitting on the street corner with a cardboard sign for a long time.  Big Grin

I really like the support on YT for HFE.

If DR stabilization doesn't pan out, or it's too difficult to use, I will come back to HFE.

Thanks John

Keep us posted on how you get on with Resolve. Are you going to try and edit the same video with resolve's "stabilization" and compare ?

Yes, that's the plan.  I did a test run with Resolve on another video where the micro twitches were worse and there was an improvement, total elimination of the twitches, but other artifacts showed up.  There are 3 settings in Resolve to stabilize, and each has its pluses and minuses, so I have been told.  The prevailing wisdom on the videos I have watched is try one, if you don't like it try another, etc.   But I clearly did something wrong after the first selection, so I need to learn more.

If the improvement is of value, I will post clips of before and after.

I've been using Resolve for a while, and I thought the stabilisation stuff was part of the paid version!

I might have to have a play myself ...

The ground is for dead people.
