Mounting smaller cameras & angle?
#1
Hey Folks,

With a parallel spot on the top of my quad for HD camera, and an included mount that was build for the bigger go-pro 4... What do others do to mount smaller/slenderer cameras such as Runcam, Foxeer Legend, or even better yet these new little cubes (as I mentioned considering getting the Runcam 3 in the other thread)...

Do you build custom mounts? cut a cheese shaped piece of balsa/styrofoam? buy something 3d printed that fits your specific needs?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I would recommend getting a 3D printed mount if possible. Apart from the protection, they normally comes with mounting features either in the form of zip tie or battery straps so makes it easier to use.
What frame and camera are you using?

This is my Mobius in a 3D printed case Smile what I normally do is use foam under it to make a tilt angle, with velcro for holding it in place, and zip tie to fix it on the frame.

I should have specified that part. I haven't got a camera yet. Top choice at the moment is runcam 3

Well with Runcam 3 is easy, you can use any 3D printed Gopro session mounts Smile
then you can just fix it on the frame with zip tie or velcro straps Smile

Thats a good point... maybe I'll start there... especially since top alternative at the moment is the Foxeer version of the cube

A question that I didn't answer as I look back at this: Which frame am I using. It's a Vortex so the space to mount the camera is parallel to the body (no good).

I finally found this which will work with the Runcam 2, plus they have a version for the tinier ones

I've got one on order and look forward to using it!

Did you try these mounts yet? I'm wondering if rigid mounts like these are more prone to jello in the video and if using foam has better results

what I like and I don't like about the sled:

What I like:
  • It's a quick, cheap solution that has support for multiple angles (at first I used the 30, now I use the 20... it also came with a 40 or 45)
  • It works on both of my quads. My vortex has seen the most use so far and with enough tries I found a good way to mount it (see what I don't like below) and the bumble bee seems to do OK with it
  • The overhang at the top looks cool when not considering the practicality of it.
What I don't like:
  • It's essentially 3 pieces of plastic... 2 curly arms that sit on a little forign-language-letter shaped base... The problem is mounting it with anything that squeezes from the outside causes it to fall apart because you push the sides towards the outsides to fit them on tabs... This can easily be fixed by smartly placed zip ties and if you're interested enough I'll post a quick tutorial on how I got around this issue.
  • It's thin 3d printed plastic... my 30 degree arms broke which is part of why Ia m using the 20. The plastic is slightly tougher than the zip ties that I was using to hold it on but not by a ton...
  • The overhang gives additional leverage to break zip ties. When landing on the head of the quad the legs of the sled actually act as a fulcrum applying significant extra force to the back end of the camera thereby demolishing zip-ties constantly... if you're like me and like to try tricks that are 3 steps out of your league then this will mean replacing zip ties every 3-4 batteries.
As for jello... I do not nearly confess to be a good enough pilot to worry about such things yet... but you're welcome to check out my youtube channel which has each and every HD video recorded from the sled.

(the 5 most recent are the ones with the HD cam... best way to tell is just to avoid thumbnails with OSD)
