Motor output settings 6s vs 4s
#1
So just I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. If I get a 3850kv 4s motor and want it to act as if it’s a 3000kv 6s motor. I set the motor output percent to 3000/3850 = 78%. I can now run a 6s battery and it runs exactly like a motor that is 3000kv? Any downside to doing this?

Does Kiss have a similar setting to do the same like betaflight?

There has been some discussion regarding this.

You take a high kv 4S motors and limited down and run 6S. The downside, motors were never meant to run on 6S. Yes, high quality motors might be able to do this without issues as you can see from videos. But it is the risk you take. I still think that taking high kv and running at lower rpm, you going to lose some torque compared to a motor design to run at lower kv from the beginning.

I believe that most people using 4S motors with 6S are reducing the limit to 66%. But since I have never tried to do it myself, I am not sure.

I am not quite sure why people are still doing this?

It can be done, but it is not the same. If you run your motor at a constant rpm, then there is little difference, but once you add the constant ramping up/down in theory the higher kv motor should respond faster but be less efficient. Torque however remains a function of current and should be the same. I think there was a video where someone tested two near identical builds but one with higher kv+motor limits...

Interesting article from Miniquadtestbench
https://www.miniquadtestbench.com/motors...orque.html

Quote:Let’s set the record straight, a change in Kv doesn't necessarily predict a consistent change (in) torque. Kv only changes the current it takes to produce the torque, or inversely, how much torque is produced by certain amount of current. The ability of a motor to actually produce torque is a factor of things like magnet strength, air-gap, cross-sectional area of the windings, and stator size. What Kv does change is Kt.

Quote:It is also important to note that on high torque motors the change in Kt doesn't necessarily impact efficiency at equivalent output in a practical way, it just means that there is a lot higher current spikes during rapid changes in RPMs, and sustained increases at the top end of the throttle as the RPMs exceed the RPMs of the lower Kv motor.  At equivalent constant RPMs, the difference in current draw is fairly insignificant. If you were to limit a high Kv motor to similar RPMs though you would see very little difference in overall efficiency, but you would get some small gains in the rate of RPM change due to the higher Kv.
