Motor heat issue 1105b
#1
I built a 130 micro with lumenier f4 lux fc, 10amp 4in1 ecs and some ipower 7500s with these 650mah 3s batteries and it flies great and all however.... the motors are getting really hot.. Like right on the 5 second too hot to touch rule, give or take depending on how hard I push it. With my Ir temp gun im showing around 140-150f on each motor after a flight.

But here's the kicker for me... I assumed ya know maybe it's just too much D or filtering or something so I spin them up in my room with ambient of like 70f for about 20 seconds and stop it in motors tab in betaflight and they are still getting really hot.

So I said screw it and just kept flying them like that and eventually I decided I'd get some of the rotorx 6500kv 1105b's. I got them in and installed them only to find they are doing the same exact thing. The screws are just the perfect length and are not getting anywhere near the windings. I tested with my multimeter just in case and found no problems either.

Then! I ended up getting a piko blx board setup in it and once again, the same problem. It flies just fine but these motor temps are really bothering me. I mean what do you even do if they are getting this hot in motors tab? I tried using these small tri-blade props, I forget the specs on them but they are too small... I get like hardly any thrust with them lol so I never use them. I also tried the rotorx 3020 single blade props, and just one half of the rotorx 2535 props and they all get hot just the same. It seems the little 3 blade props actually get a little hotter.. probably cause I have to throttle more to get it go as fast.

3S is too much for these motors.

For a 3S setup, I'd be using the 4000kv version or maybe the 5000kv. 7500kv is more for 2S.

Awe really? They even say rated for up to 3s. Figures. Dang but 4000kv is really slow... Guess I'll just stick with these until they give out lol. Getting up to 70mph with the 7500s. Haven't pushed the 6500s yet though.

As you overheat them and the magnets start to demagnetise, they'll spin even faster. This will make them even hotter and probably cook the grease out of the bearings. Don't expect them to last long!

The only way you'd get away with 3S on 7500kv would be with 2" or 1.9" props but even then, I reckon they'll get quite warm.

So if they have lighter/smaller props it will be easier on them even though I have to give it even more throttle to fly? Seems they were getting even hotter that way.

It could also be that your D-term is too high. A 650mA/h battery also sounds rather large for a 130 sized quad with 1105 motors. I run the 450mA/h 3S batteries on my Atom 122 with 1105 4000kv motors and RX3020 props.

That gives me plenty of speed and the motors come down cool.

Well I'm getting around 5 mins on them flying averagely and up to 10mins if I casually cruise around. It feels really fast and handling seems great so I never tried a 450 but I was really considering it early on.

Maybe I'll get some 4000s and give um a go. I have my D-term at 4 with it on 8k/4k. I wouldn't think that was too much is it? Default setting was like 20 haha. I tried flying at all different levels below 20 and can't really tell any difference as far as temps go.

Without a black box log, it's impossible to say if your tune is the problem or not, but I'd still say that 7500kv is just too high for 3S power on anything but the smallest of propellers. The smaller propellers won't, of course, be able to lift as much weight either.
