Minim OSD usable for this?
#1
I am an oldster(later 70s) Sad  and newbie to FPV Smile . I have a feeling that this forum may be mostly about drone racing and be mostly over my head, but I have done a bit quarter midget pylon racing in the 70's.

Have been flying RC since 1954 as a kid in Germany.
It was 1 channel, 1 tube and a compound escapement.
I have built several brushless quad copters from parts I got from Germany back in 2006. Believe it or not, I still have 2 of those and one is still flyable since I gutted it and installed a Naze 32.

I have recently purchased a HUBSAN H501S. It flies great, but the FPV is a joke. The built in transmitter screen is unreadable. That is why I've built Quanum box FPV set. It works but it is scary to fly since my video comes from a cable connected to the transmitter and has no Lipo voltage display and no timer.

I would like to install an OSD into this quad copter and have youtube video where someone used a 'SuperSimple OSD' from Hobby King.

I wonder if:
  • The minim OSD would be a better choice.
  • The minim OSD would be usable without a flight controller, because it appears to be designed to used with various ones, while the 'SuperSimple OSD' from Hobby King is just a series connection between the camera and the VTX.
  • The minim OSD, according to some posts gets very hot and some have added heat sinks to it. I don't know if this is only when powered from 12 volt. My Hubsan H501S is powered by a 2S Lipo (8.4 v max).
  • Would the minim OSD require a capacitor when powered from the Lipo?
  • The minim OSD wiring diagrams I saw had a blue wire connecting to a terminal on the FC marked receiver. Is this required? If so where would connect that on the Hubsan H501S?I
It would be great if some of you could shed some light onto my questions.

-yes minim osd can do it...
-yes minim osd can read directly from battery voltage (matter of settings)
-you will need 5v power regulator (at least i always powered it with 5v) - If you go with microminim ost, you are cool with power from battery on this one linked

things to consider:
-as you will/might have osd from your quad to monitor it state you will get addtional overlay of the osd... imho might be messy
-but why? isn't it easier to get a lipoalarm and become a deaf person as it will go off next to your ear ?
-if still going this way i'd use microminim osd and ensure you will provide power throught the "correct" power pads
All the best

Thank you Grisha,

I just want to mention that Hubsan has some proprietary OSD which shows up if viewing the screen in one of their transmitters. It does however not show up when viewing the FPV in goggles or an LCD screen which gets video from its own receiver.
The Hobby King OSD I mentioned in my post above has the voltage and the elapsed time display in a black band across the bottom of the screen.
Does the minim OSD provide the ability to display information at user selected screen locations?
Also, is the font and font color selectable?
There is no room for a 5 v regulator, but the documentation I saw indicated the ability to power it from up to 12 volts.
Do you have any idea of what the smallest 10 volt capacitor might be? Or do you have a specific recommendation?
Does the minim OSD require any additional hardware for flashing it?

Yes, you can display OSD text at any location you want with MinimOSD, this can be set in the computer software.
I believe you can change font and font colour, but you need to upload them via the software, I have never messed around with this myself..

The minimOSD does get quite hot even being powered by 5V, it will get even hotter with 12V. Standard MinimOSD can be powered by 5V as well as 12V. We are recommended to use 5V to avoid over-heat.
There is a micro version of MinimOSD (1/3 the size of the regular one), and it can only be powered by 5V.

To be honest, the SuperSimple OSD might be better in your case, if all you need is just voltage monitoring, and timer. We use MinimOSD because we want to connect it to the flight controller and display more flight information.

Just to add to Oscars post - you need an FTDI unit to flash the code onto a minimosd, but some units come preflashed. You'll still need it change settings.
You can also try betaflight passtrough feature to connect as your naze comes with built in FTDI unit anyway, more about it in the video:

Find me on Youtube and Instagram. I currently fly: DRC Aura, NOX5R, Minimalist 112 and drive a scrap RC car

Note: This passthrough feature will not apply to the flight controller in the hubsan.  I doubt you can even establish serial communication with it without some very fine soldering, if at all.

[But on your next quad Big Grin  and for flight controllers running Clean/BetaFlight, the passthrough feature works well for "configuring" the minimosd.  If you ever need to "flash" it though, you'll still need an FTDI adapter.  The problem with flashing is that the minimosd needs a reset.  (Please see the comments attached to the video on youtube.)]

If you do decide to spring for a minimOSD or a micro minimOSD, some vendors sell them WITH the FTDI adapter (and very reasonable).

EDIT: BTW, if you've got room for the super simple OSD, there is more than enough room for a micro minimOSD and a small 5V regulator. It will be more tinkering, but sounds like you are up for that Big Grin
