Micro Minimum OSD Wiring for race quads
#1
Hey All,

You can get the osd from here:
http://www.banggood.com/MICRO-MinimOSD-M...90556.html

You will need a usb to uart programmer like this:
http://www.banggood.com/3_3V-or-5_5V-USB...10726.html

I've used this on a 130 build, to save space solder only the pins you need like this  (you need those pins to update the firmware):
http://www.eurny-rc.fr/wp-content/upload...%C3%A9.jpg

Oscar explains it quite well how the wiring and software is installed:

I'm a big fan of micro minimum osd with mwosd firmware.   I just wanted to share my wiring diagram that simplifies the wiring.  I now have this setup on all my quads and it's been working well.  I really wanted to save space and I figured out a wiring scheme that works quite well specially on small builds.

If you have an F1 FC (Naze32, Flip32, etc..) It might not connect to cleanflight properly when powered up if tx/rx is connected to the osd.  Here's what I do for my setup:

1) Since most VTX's output 5v for camera, I'm using the same line to power the osd.
2) Instead of connecting vbat & gnd to the osd, I'm reading voltage from FC.  This setting can be enabled as an option
3) The +5v line coming out of the osd is split, one goes to the camera, the other goes to the osd  (osd is already grounded, you don't need to connect GND beside +5v)
4) I don't fly that far, I never worry about RSSI
5) When connecting to cleanflight, I simply disconnect the vtx from the power and it's good to go.

Thanks for sharing trojanGoat Smile
I prefer getting both VBAT and RSSI info from FC as well Smile wiring is so much cleaner !

I love your idea of powering the OSD + fpv camera with the 5V from VTX, very neat solution Smile

Gave up on using MinimOSD. Trashed the 4th OSD. All of them did not work. Atleast the 4th one had video but no overlay.  Angry

Do you have a multi meter? Test your voltages. Maybe you're cooking it? If you follow my wiring set up it should work!

Yes I did test the voltage before putting them. The switching BEC voltage was 4.89V. Could the sudden spikes or changes in voltage affect the MAX7456 chip?
Maybe will give this a shot. From where do you buy the minimOSD?

EDIT: oops saw the Banggood link Tongue Smile

Yeah I got them from BG. But we're lucky in Toronto, there's lots of local stores that stock them. I think the lcfilter should negate the spikes. You can also solder a capacitor right on the +5v & gnd if you think the spikes are killing it.

If you power from vtx, voltage spikes shouldn't affect it.

Thanks for your work. Very nice diagram! But if I wire my minim OSD this way I have only ~2V on my cam and 5V on OSD. Dies it works like voltage divider?

It doesn't split the voltage, whatever comes out of your vtx is what gets supplied to your camera and osd.  Make sure your vtx is outputting 5v otherwise you will cook the osd and possibly your camera

My VTx output is 5V but if I measure on OSD +5V and GND cam there are only about 2V

Sorry my fault I'm idiot. I soldered my cam Signal to the GND and GND (cam) to Vin on OSD. Idiot Big Grin now it works great. Had so many problems and now it works! Thank you so so much! Greets Darius

Hi I have a FrSky D4R-ii on PPM. I tried to connect channel 2 to RSSI on MinimOSD micro but it doesn't work. Basically it takes away the overlay and gives out a dotted grid instead. Sometimes just take out the overlay and outputs nothing. I read that an RC filter is required as the D4R-ii RSSI output doesn't communicate directly with MinimOSD Micro. Wondering if anyone had success with this. Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried it myself, but I think you can connect your rssi to the FC and simply read rssi values from the fc.  This minimizes the amount of stuff you need to connect to the osd.

Hi Trojangoat,
Any idea how I go about it?
I can switch ON ADC_RSSI and on Cleanflight I can see the RSSI value. However I'm not sure how to then display it on MinimOSD Micro. I use MWOSD and I heard the option for reading RSSI from FC requires RSSI to be set on a spare channel on radio. I can't follow the same instructions on Taranis because on my Turnigy9x I can't seem to find RSSI as a source.
Any thoughts?

Hi I haven't tried that unfortunately. I usually don't care about rssi since I use my quads for racing. The tx signal never cuts off in the short tracks I've been doing.
