Nice idea if You prefer pins. I also recommend cutting the pins before soldering so the don't stick out so much.

But be careful - doing it after they are soldered can damage the gyro.

OH DOH!!!!!! Thanks for mentioning that! I never considered that a quick snap of my diagonal cutters imparted such a highly directed and concentrated  amount of mechanical shock force upon the board. 
This could explain things on an old APM board that wasnt up to snuff after being taken apart and put together many times including cutting or snapping off pins with cutters.
