LiPo battery bag recommendations
#1
The title says it all. What do y’all recommend for bags or pouches to store, transport and charge LiPo or LiIon batteries?

Currently I have seven 1s 450mAh 80c/160c, three 6s 1100mAh 75c, and two (LiIon) 2s 5000mAh batteries

Safest bet is probably a metal ammo can, with part of the seal removed for venting.

I’ve got a variety of those fireproof/explosionproof lipo bags, but, I haven’t tested them to see if they’re actually fireproof, and have no plans to. Tongue
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.

I don't think the 1-2S will ever easily blow or burn. The ones I would worry about are the 6S Lipos. 4-6S are the worrisome sizes. 3S can be a bit trippy too. I've had a couple of them come down rather hot after a rip session. But you just put them somewhere to cool down.

I second the ammo can and drill a couple of holes in the top to allow the smoke and pressure to vent. If you have any skill with metalwork, create like a criss cross pattern, so each lipo is stored in it's own space/hole and make each hole deep, so if you get a fire in one hole, you lose 1x Lipo, not all of them.

Basic bags are great for small lipos. If you loaded up on 6s packs, and if you happen to live in an area that gets cold, i'd look at the ethix heated bag. The newest version is actually fire resistant and the heat element is fantastic during cold days out. But that is 1000% overkill if you're primarily on 1-3s packs.

Wondering if matty posted bag recommendation for transporting, not necessarily for safety purpose.

I can't see how the cheap fabric ones with the grey lining can only be safe with one pack at a time. Or a few 1s or 2s tiny packs.

Reminded me of this, notice what happens if you use an ammo can with the seal on it:

i keep my drink nice cool i thermal bag, or i keep my lipos prewarmed but what can a bag do more? xD bags and safe doesnt match to me xD i dont trust in bags

1s or 2s aren realy less dangerous, there are even lower battery quality around and hv lips we have much on 1 and 2s doesnt match safety more at all. their energy is lower, but a fire doesnt need to start big to be a big problem.

the most importance for safety is while charging, take a some ceramics or some other cooking stuff... there is a lot gear around for charging safety, better ones than bags.

fire out of lipo while sitting in a box isnt usual, storing should be mentioned but first focus for safety should be the charching process.

I charge in a steel cup, I only use single Lipo balance chargers that slow charge via the balance lead at really low mAh, no direct charging via the xt30. I don't abuse my lipos and I haven't had one explode yet. Treat them like a small grenade with the respect you would give to a small grenade and you shouldn't have issues.

Oh and if your Lipo is hot while charging, test it with a multimeter and see if you fragged a cell. If you have, discharge it down to storage and make a decision on whether you are going to try and save the Lipo by removing the damaged cell or scrapping it.

Generally fires happen due to people doing stupid things with lipos. They don't have a tendency to spontaneously combust for no reason. Generally it happens because they got punctured in some way, maybe they overheated because you are flying and it's like stupidly hot outside, you overcharged them (charging Lipo at Li-HV voltages), charging at too high C rate or you crashed your quad really badly and punctured a cell. If you charge them and use them as intended and treat them well, they don't tend to explode.

I appreciate the responses.

I live in the tropics and a heated bag, be it good or bad, is just a waste for me

I agree that an ammo box (vented) would be probably the best but a lot of the bags I see with flame retardant materials seem to contain the fire and allow for venting

I see a lot of bags/pouches that look the same with different names or logos. I’m assuming they are made by the manufacturer and rebranded. There can’t be that many different types.

I’ve read good things about the Bat-Safe. I figure if I’m heading out to where I fly and I have a LiPo fire I’m pretty sure my Wrangler would go up in smoke no matter what my storage/transporting bag is.

I’m looking into a charging station consisting of a 12” ceramic pot filled 1/4 with sand and hopefully at least 12” from any flammable materials.

A couple of questions for y’all with the Bat-Safe boxes.
What size(s) do you have?
What batteries do you use in it/them?

After looking at some videos I’m impressed with how they handle the fire, smoke, and gasses. Also, the battery fire inside of a cardboard box with paper on top and nothing outside of the Bat-Safe igniting got my attention

I’m thinking two of the mini boxes would be preferential over the larger one

This is the medium sized Bat Safe, not a ton of room. I initially got it for charging large 6s packs but it was a bit too tedious to try and parallel charge in once I shifted to FPV.
