LiPo Battery advice please
#1
This here <-click here is the list of parts of the drone I'm building, I already have most of the parts and I'm still waiting for few more to arrive.

I'm thinking about these two batteries:

  1. Gens Ace Tattu R-Line 1300mAh 14.8V 4S 95C Lipo Battery 164 g
    C rating @ 75% Throttle = (4x 21.3A) / 1.3A = 85.2A / 1.3A = 65.5
    C rating @ 88% Throttle = (4x 30A) / 1.3A = 120A / 1.3A = 92.3
    C rating @ 100% Throttle = (4x 36.5A) / 1.3A = 146A / 1.3A = 112.3

  2. Gens Ace Tattu R-Line 1550mAh 14.8V 4S 95C Lipo Battery 192 g (28 g heavier and £5 more expensive)
    C rating @ 75% Throttle = (4x 21.3A) / 1.55A = 85.2A / 1.55A = 55
    C rating @ 88% Throttle = (4x 30A) / 1.55A = 120A / 1.55A = 77.5
    C rating @ 100% Throttle = (4x 36.5A) / 1.55A = 146A / 1.55A = 94.2
I realize that mostly I'll be flying at around 75% throttle but I want to get the right one anyway.

This is going to be my first drone and I kind of am going for the speed, but obviously at the beginning I'll need to slowly get into it but I don't want to buy midway things and then be forced to buy again. So I want the right stuff from the beginning.

So my question, is this 1550 gonna be a lot of an extra burden for the drone with its 28 grams more? Will it get a lot of drift because of it at hard turns?

Thanks

Are you going to bolt your quad to the floor? The amperage numbers looks like static thrust test numbers without knowing what your actual setup is. If you got a normal 5" setup, you are probably looking at lower average values

If you are definitely going for speed, go for the 1300mAh. I have the Tattu 1550 and love them, but I never race, just fly around my property looking for good views. The difference in flight time for the 1550 is negligible when flying at top speed. Yes you'll get more time, but just barely. So if you plan on racing ever, stick with 1300s. If you want to putter around the 1550s are great.

You could probably save quite some money going with the 75C or even 45C versions of the tattus, if you look around a bit. And instead get one or two more. Wink

About capacity, i only have 1300mAh packs but even those are almost too large for all the newer, smaller frames. Sad

I'd go with 1300, you'll hardly get any extra flight time from the 1550 and will get the disadvantages from the extra grams.
I have pretty much all tattu 1300 45C and 75C and only one 1550 75C, you can guess why Smile

And as fftunes wrote, unless you really don't care about the $$, you're probably better of getting regular 75Cs (45C may be short for your setup and tattus are known for the hyped up C ratings). It's bad enough when a cheaper battery gets destroyed in a crash after just a couple cycles, much worse an expensive one.

Just one more question, about charging lipos.

1300mah on 1C charging means to set 1.3A on the charger
1550mah on 1C will mean 1.5A

is above correct?

and also when the battery manufacturer recommends 1-3C charging, is it a good idea to charge it at let's say 2C? I don't want to shorten my battery life to quickly.

I always stick to the 1C rule.  You can go higher the odd time if you're in a hurry, but you will shorten the life.

So your calc is correct. 1300mah x .001c = 1.3 amp charge rate.

100% agree. I always charge my 1800mah at 1.8. I have bumped it 2.2 when I was in a hurry, but I noticed a little heat on the battery when it was done and decided to just plan better to avoid burning the house down.
