Lacrosse Charger Acting Up (BC-9009)
#1
I know it's a long shot but seeing if anyone might know what's causing my Lacrosse Charger (model BC-9009) to act up like this?

I have a charger from these guys. I can't tell you what the problem is. But I some of the models have a meltdown problem. I would contact La Crosse.

Sorry to see you are issues with yours. I had a La Crosse that I loved until it melted. I contacted them as it was under a year old and they agreed to replace it...but burn me once, burn me/burn me twice, oh heck no!

I replaced it with a NiteCore that I have not had any issues with in three years.

If it's already out of warranty, open it up and look for any electrolytic capacitors that are either leaking electrolyte from the top (there will be obvious dried up residue) or that are bulging on the top (the tops should be perfectly flat). If any are then swap them out for some decent quality low ESR 105°C replacements of the same voltage/capacity and see if it solves the problem.

Thanks everyone. Yea I've owned this for at least 5 years so I'll crack it open. I did send Lacrosse an email but I'm not keeping my hopes up. I also came across reports of burnout on fast charging where these things literally melted. Kinda crazy. I'm also going to look into NiteCore.

Would love to see what you find when you get your LaCrosse opened.  I never opened mine as they agreed to replace it, but I never used the new one and gave it to a friend.  I think Snow is spot on that the caps likely were the culprit.

I replaced mine with the NiteCore D4 and I charge 18650, RCR123, AA and AAA with it.  Even charging four 18650 3000mah LiON batteries is does not get hot or smell.  My LaCrosse always smelled like heated electronics.

No matter what, be safe!

It's too bad because my Lacrosse never gave me problems at all and even saved a lot of batteries I thought were done. Hmmm I don't see anything weird though but I am no engineer ...

I'm not even sure what these doohickys are ...

I suspect it might actually be the power supply? Either way I really needed a charger so I picked up the Nite Core "New i4" charger and like you said kaitylynn it's real nice being able to charge 18650 batteries with it too! Thanks!
