Klipper Firmware
#1
Does anyone have Klipper on their 3D print? Just wondering if it is worth it? Aside from speed, are the prints better?

I have it on my vorons. I like it. But using it for awhile just got me used to it. I haven’t updated it fr over a year and all still run fine. But I don’t mind Marlin either. Klipper is just easier to customize in my opinion.

I cannot compare the vorons to my other printers running marlin, but the vorons are like greased lightning whereas marlin is like a 2 legged turtle. And I haven’t even really tuned them. I can eke more out of klipper.

I’m no expert but with more than 6 vorons running, a Prusa mk3+ with an XL on order, 5 ender types in various stages of upgrades, and a couple resin printers I’m no slouch either.

I may not know all there is to know about it, but I can certainly try and point you in the right direction.

Did you have specific concerns?

Pennywise, sorry I didn't see your respond.

Here is what I am planning to do. I have a Artillery sidewinder x1. I am ungrading the motherboard with a Bigtreetech Manta M5P. Unfortunately, there is no config file for the x1. I have the M5P all loaded with the generic config. Since there is no config for the x1, I think I will use the config for the x2 and modify it for the x1.

A few challenges I need to overcome.
- getting a working config file
- adding BL Touch and configuring it.
- adding a filament runout script and figuring how to wire that.

Klipper seems complicated at first, but you are right. It seems much easier to config.

By the way, did you build your Vorons from scratch. I was debating on whether to go with a Voron or just go with Bambu Lab and call it a day.

fwiw, just got an email from Sovol about their newest offer:

Sovol SV07 Plus Large Klipper 3D Printer Max Speed 500mm/s 300mm*300mm*350mm
US $319.00
https://sovol3d.com/products/sovol-sv07-...3d-printer

Says it has a meanwell 600w power supply...

Pardon the interruption but curious if it would scratch this itch?

That is a pretty good deal. At least for me, I want to venture onto CoreXY and enclosed setup like the Voron 2.4 or Bambu Lab.

I just bought the Sovol SV07 Plus yesterday, will be here in a few minutes. I would say YES this will scratch your itch.

I have their SV01 as well and it is by far the most dialed in printer I have for TPU, and that is stock out of the box. I've adjusted speeds and temps, and I am almost to the point of not messing with it anymore. I just need to eliminate the stringing issues, but I can live with them for now.

I wasn't impressed with Sovol's launch event, but I am impressed with their hardware. It is cheap, but works very well. And they are direct drive, so no worrying about bowden tube clogs, and this one has Klipper!!!!

I'll let you know how I like it, but I don't see me hating it, that's for sure.

I haven't been let down by Sovol yet.

It is. And I pulled the trigger.

Sadly the SV07 is not CoreXY though. It is still a bedslinger.

My next purchase will be the Bambu Carbon. It is pricey, but I've heard good things about it.

Plus I want to see how it compares to my Voron farm...

If you are thinking of Voron, I have built every kit out there, so I am opinionated. Overall they are the same, with minor differences in which Chinese made stuff they included. Extrusions have all been good, but I like the colored LDO kits, so I buy the frame separate.

Totally understand, I've had my eyes on the Rolohaun Rook for a while but have yet to pull the trigger. There is supposed to be a 2020 kit for it as well if you might be interested in a smaller coreXY... worth checking out.

edit to add, maybe a linky would be handy huh...:

Rook MK1 By Rolohaun 3D - $299.99

HoneyBadger (Beta) rook 2020 frame add on - $36.99

Same, I only have the SV01 tho, it has been fun and have resisted the urge to get more than one printer so far... Klipper built in sounds nice, prolly especially for a bed slinger coz it really ought to help make smoother prints. I don't care so much about voom voom here... Smile

Following with interest as I'm curious how it works out for ya.

Started piecing it together last night. Should be quick, but I had some other stuff come up. After my job interview this morning I'll get back into it and should have my first TPU part printed today.

And I keep seeing that Rook popup, I may have to build one of those too. There are a few other unknown printers out there that look cool and I wouldn't mind building, but hands are full.

So I have a question regarding the configuration file. As I mentioned, I have an Artillery Siderwinder X1. I am replacing the motherboard (MKS Gen L 1.0) with a Bigtreetech Manta M5P.

Here is the generic config file for the BTT

https://github.com/Klipper3d/klipper/blo...ta-m5p.cfg

And here is a config that someone made for Klipper for the X1, but it is for a different motherboard.

https://github.com/Clank50AE/Clanks-Klip...LTouch.cfg

I know that I just need to change the parameters that apply to my printer such as "position_max: 310 and

homing_speed: 40.0". But with Klipper, you use "!" to reverse the polarity of the pin and "^" for pull-up and "~" for pull-down. Do I keep these settings relative to the BTT or do I use the settings from the X1 config?

Keep them the same and see if they behave properly when you start ensuring the motors are spinning the right way (well, not motors, but yes stepper motors).

My first 2.4 build was giving me no end of issues with the stepper directions. I'd adjust one and it seemed right, but the other one would be going the wrong way.

I don't know much about the sidewinder, but the steppers are the same as long as they are on the same axis. Which was another one of my issues; one of mine was incorrect. Eventually I got there, but it was frustrating.

Luckily most other people out there building vorons ran into similar issues.

The biggest issue with building vorons is the super-scattered, often super-confusing, documentation. I was putting together an LDO kit, they didn't mention anywhere in the box to follow along on their git. I was following Vorons instructions. And the problem was more evident when I went to build my Fysetc, blurolls, and formbot versions they all had different manuals as well.

BIGGEST (seriously) is follow along with whomever kit you purchased for the electronics as they vary greatly. Depending on what they leave out or substitute.

When you start adjusting those steppers in the config, make sure you "opposite" them together: if you reverse "x" with a "!" make sure you add it or remove it from the "y" and "z" as well. Until you figure out which direction they are moving.

Voron's discord is actually very good, if you steer clear of the vendor sections. There are some very opinionated and often wrong folks arguing within there, especially that dude from hill country - a real deep fried zero that dude - in my and my bank's interactions with him.

Chiming back in to let you guys know what I think of this newer Sovol.

I can say it is as good, and better, than the SV01 that I have had for the past 4-5 years.

Out of the box I slowed the prints down close to my other ones and flawless. I must say Sovol is one of the best, cheaper brands out there. Both printers I have from them are printing TPU straight out of the box with minimal issues. I do have some stringing, but I think that is filament and environment based as I didn't print TPU this much prior to the start of the year (when I began my obsession with FPV), and have to dial it in more.

But out of the box, this is a great TPU printer. If you have a super-dry environment (like the desert) you'll be golden. I am on the coast so humidity is high, and I have to battle it, but I have boxes and desiccant so I can fight that battle.

As soon as I get it tuned up proper, ensure the spools are as dry as possible, and get rid of my stringing (which I can just burn off and be fine with it) I'll be good. And I'll probably pick up a couple more of these to print all my TPU.

I'm sad I didn't buy 3 from the getgo as the price is higher now, but I can engineer a discount out of them.

I am happy to report that I have more or less transitioned to Klipper with new motherboard and stepper drivers. I have to say, configuring Klipper is pretty easy. Have a user interface that you can change things without reflashing is nice. My first test layer came out nice. Printing a benchy now. I double the print speed I usually print at. Will report how that went.

The new stepper driver is much quieter.

I bought a BL Touch a long time ago, but never hook it up. I tried everything, but I can't seem to get the BL touch to work properly with Klipper. Never tried it with Marlin, so I can't say if I am doing something wrong or the BL touch is broken. I might have to get another one just to check against.

I’ve got a brand new in the box bl touch (not clone) that you’re welcome to for free. I’m unlikely to ever install it. I got it for free from Creality a while back during some holiday customer appreciation giveaway thing.
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Thank you for the offer. I am might take you up on this offer. Even though I went ahead and bought one. I know that the current one I have is genuine. The probe does respond to move the pin up and down. It just doesn't register a trigger. The interesting thing to do is figure out why it doesn't register a triggered. I am doing a little Googling on the matter. To see if there is a way to fix it.
