Kingkong 90GT odyssey
#16
I know this isn't going to make you feel any better Emanuele, but I received my 90GT plus a thumbnail sized FrSky S-Bus receiver yesterday. So, apart from cooking, yesterday evening was dedicated to fitting the receiver, calibrating the ESCs and creating a model on my radio and getting it bound and working happily with the receiver.

A quick test in my front room showed everything to be working very nicely, so I'll probably slip out at lunchtime for a quick one battery flight around the park. More batteries are ordered and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have them tomorrow.

It looks like it'll be quite cold here on Saturday, so I'll be doing just like sevet has done and adding a micro OSD and a couple of WS2812 LEDs ready for some more flying on Sunday.

It's a real shame there's no way to add a beeper to this little rocket. I might have to investigate some micro surgery and get a transistor connected to the right pin on the MCU to support one. I'm more than a little worried about crashing this flying FPV and never being able to find it again. Confused

Happy for you,
I know, I know how this thing fascinates,
guess what kept me going! Rolleyes
I've invested incredible amounts of time and considerable money by now, writing back and forth w. banggood etc...
..the point is that all this really makes me doubt myself. I'm usually very hard on myself - that's sort of a prerequisite for being a surgeon, and I'm everything but a quitter - I can't do that at work, and that's a considerable part of my life.
I'm not used to fail this blatantly. Reading that "it's just me, not the product", like all over the internet, doesn't make it easier.
My Kingkong has LEDs and beeper and option for up to 6s by now, but *heck, I can't seem to get even just a little coordinated hop out of it. It drives me insane, especially my tendency to sink my teeth into problems and not let go.
There must be something I forget or haven't learned yet, but my motivation and physical stamina is wearing out. After all, my patients are always priority..
There's creating a big gravitational hole around this darn thing. It resists reason. CS mocks me by not responding - which is sort of comprehensible, since I appear to be the only idiot NOT able to make this thing work. *ohLord, how messed up everything is in my appartment and on my workspace because of this thing.
This is the downside to this drug, really. I have to find a way to cope with it and probably kick those three microquad-attempts in the bin, I don't want to see them anymore.
My approach will be to slowly lower the scale, as I said - Kraken 3inch etc..
I actually built the alternative Kingkong-version within 2 hours, and spent the rest of the night troubleshooting and taking it apart & putting back together innumerable times..
Oh f****....
It's so frustrating because it seems beyond reasoning, and up to now I had never accepted such - there's always a way, and there always was. Up to now, that is. Found my great complication master, a tiny quad. Cool Dodgy

Don't bin them! If you don't want them, I'll send you my address and send you one back fully working for a true 'bind and fly'.

That was pretty much what I was thinking of doing. Good idea re-mapping an unused motor output for it. That saves having to solder to one of the pins on the MCU.

Annoyingly, I just took mine out for a quick maiden flight and after a small crash which looked like a failsafe, it won't talk to the configurator any more. The flight controller boots up like it should and flashes the status LED once it has calibrated the gyro. The CP2102 UART - USB bridge is detected and configured as a serial port, so that's working as well, but there's no output from the serial port at all.

Guess I'll have to strip it down and check the soldering on the CP2102. While I'm there, I'll cut the pins out that they've used to connect flight controller to ESC and replace them with pins and sockets so that it can be taken apart next time without major surgery.

The props are a little fragile! It wasn't much of a crash - it was only about 3m up when it dived at the grass, but still it snapped a blade off one prop and put a white stress line on another one. Still, I'd rather replace propellers than replace motors.

The battery that came with it is rubbish. After a three minute flight, one cell reads 3.84V and the other one only 3.25V. It'll probably burst into flames when I connect it to the charger! Big Grin

Well, it's not all me, then ;-)
Watch out with that receiver, too! Mine spontaneously lost connection while setup - on a regular base. Didn't inspire much confidence..
I had it replaced with a xm+, which is less hassle binding, and reception is incomparably better..
Happy zooming around!
I'm into my third dismantling session (..*can't leave it for now..), swapping motors around as I found one of the 1103's drawing uncontrolled amps, and I have no replacement. Going for the 1104/7500KV ones from the ix2 now..
Is it possible that an incorrect motor behavior was the source of my FC bogus? I'm a complete noob in electronics, but I figured that wouldn't contribute to an orderly functioning, and it would explain the spontaneous side-flipping of the 90GT when trying to throttle up from idle..
My failsafe, however, is the parallel Kraken3-build :-)
Oh, that thing looks neat! I'm still figuring out the components to mount..
Another thing my mind is still trying to bending into (banality): Why is "+" where the electrons come from? In my mind, it should be "-", but - hey, we'll get used to it..
Wishing everybody mild-mannered Gods of FPV,
E

Bizarrely, when I'd finished dinner, I plugged the 90GT into my computer again and it connected first time! It may be that the SUB cable it came with is dodgy, but I'm not yet convinced.

Thinking about the trouble you describe with your receiver, I've have seen that if you bind with too many channels enabled it can cause some strange behaviour. I bound mine with eight channels, but it shows completely erratic behaviour on channel eight, which I don't use or need, so I might re-bind it with seven channels instead and see if that makes any difference.

I have seen wild channel values before with DSMX satellite receivers when the 1024/2048 provider setting was incorrect, so it's always possible that something similar could have caused your problem.

The negative terminal is where the electrons come from!

..so why is the "+"cable red? Nah, nevermind.. Tongue
I got some other news for you, my friend:

..do you know what this means??!!
I still can't believe it, and I'm not lulling myself in the comfort of victory, but..
..it means that I'll be flying drunk tonight ROFL
I'll have to come back to tell the whole story. As this little thing is churning away at batteries, it has been churning away at my nerves.. Cry
Sure taught me some respect for what you guys leisurely do. It might not be rocket science, but close to it. I thought that, with my pretty solid knowledge of basic physics, thermodynamics and calculus, this wouldn't be a problem. Wrong. Oh-so-wrong..
One always forgets about the human factor, especially when dealing with electronics. As you put it nicely, programming is art, and there sure goes a lot of IC-talk into aerobatic movements of these little thingies..
Conclusion:
It WAS the motor. All along, I fear.
It busted ESC's, which in turn gave funny readings to the FC, which in its turn corrected ppm values and so forth. *mindblowing..
I couldn't nail it down earlier, because I was lacking a reasonable replacement. Seen from this point of view, I was lucky that the iX2 didn't work either (fried ESC's & adventurous solderwork from the start, no blame on its motors..), so I could use the correct KV motors.
I think I largely exagerated with my installation of LEDs and Beeper and all those zip-ties & heatshrinks, so the weight went up and now it won't fly longer than 20 sec. without giving batt warnings. *oohh, I soooo don't mind that!! Big Grin
Since I have the option for 3s (..or 4s, if I like..), I'll be converting a couple of "meaty" 650mAh 3S Lipos for Brutekong-use (..it's not really a Kingkong 90GT anymore..) and have a blast at sucking them dry. Already got some foamy gates for the appartment.. ROFL ROFL ROFL
So instead of soldering, I'll get some stick-time tonight. You cannot imagine how happy this makes me!
My world's gravity has shifted back into place. Everything else is not a problem anymore. *amazing, how this got me. Gosh, I was doubting myself and my capacities all the way into the OP theatre!! Tomorrow I'll subliminally calm down my employees with a radiant mood, you can be sure of that..! Cool
Maybe it was my threat to bin the whole stuff - not entirely unintentional, even if desperately metaphysical, I was hoping to scare this little bugger a bit and force it into cooperation.. ROFL ROFL ROFL
Well, it worked! ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL
So now I'm sitting in front of a tumbler of my favorite Rum (Plantation, Barbados - if you don't dislike this venom, I recommend giving it a go!) and run up the soldering iron for some 3S Lipo conversion to fit the 90-Frankenstein-GT, *haahh...
If I only could hug you, my friend - you'd have trouble catching your breath!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THAAAANK YOU soo much for standing by me with this. It ran me down a little, but in return future builds are going to be a blast!! Can't wait to put together the Kraken-3-inch, and since I've been mailing around with Will of ImpulseRC, a 7-inch version of the Helix is coming my way..
Yesyesyes, I got it baaaaaadddd!!!!
I'm already glancing over at a 6-inch Kraken-build too, and I'm fully aware that I'm exagerating! ROFL
It's just that I have so many questions concerning ESC's, motors & prop-combinations, that I figured that one "big" mini-quad (..my beloved, beloved, beloved 6-inch Helix..) wouldn't be enough to figure out all questions, particularly not at the same time or on the same day of flight. Flying season can come now, for sure!! I'll be standing there B my armada of 4-rotor-darlings, gleaming all over..
Call it midlife-crisis or second puberty or whatever you like,
I don't mind a single bit! I don't think I've ever felt this intensely about a female, to tell the truth. Now THAT's some geek-stuff, huh??! Whistling
Happy & successful flying, be and do well, oh-mentor-my-mentor,
and thank you again for the support. I owe you.

*smooch & tigerhug,
Emanuele

Success! Thumbs Up

Great news, and a huge learning experience for you as well.

When it comes to building quads, if all the parts work then it's not that difficult as long as you can solder proficiently, read and understand specifications and wiring diagrams and put all the parts together cleanly and correctly.

It's when there are problems that a completely different skill set, plus a bunch of replacement parts come into play. Fault finding is often a black art as a fault can have knock-on effects that make it hard to determine the root cause of a problem - as you have discovered!

Good on you! You persisted through the frustration and came out the other end with at least part of your sanity intact. Big Grin

It's when falling on our faces that we learn the most - I like to repeat that pretty much at any occasion: Continuously winning just will get us daft from Champagne overconsumption.. (can't stand that foamy stuff, to be honest Rolleyes)
Have a good day!

For sure, we learn the most through failing. The highs and lows are what make life interesting. As much as I complain about the weather here in Sweden, the huge contrasts between the four seasons here make you feel them all so much more. Anything is preferable to the two seasons that the UK has - warm and rainy or cold and rainy. Smile

Champagne? Yes please!

(Actually, just about anything with alcohol in it is acceptable, apart from Grappa. Big Grin)

I'm glad to say that at least three of the batteries that I ordered yesterday actually arrived with the post this afternoon.

Having been out for a quick flight on the new batteries and doing some testing at home, I can happily say that the reason my quad fell out of the sky on its maiden flight was the faulty battery it came with. As one one the cells doesn't seem to charge, as soon as that cell drops below 3.0 volts, the battery voltage just collapses without warning, hence the sudden, failsafe like fall.

The batteries that arrived today are some GensAce 450mA/h 25C 2S batteries. They weigh in at 33g, so they're a whole 13g heavier than the 350mA/h that the 90GT came with. That can certainly be felt in the handling and at zero throttle, the little 90GT drops from the sky alarmingly quickly. Still, they provided a solid four minutes of energetic flight and returned to 3.7V after landing, so I'd say they're a reasonable option.

I'll probably get the rest of the batteries I ordered on Monday (no post here in Sweden on Saturdays) and I'll post my findings as I get time to test!

Hey-hoo Abba-man ;-)
I love the seasons too! We're made to filter out background noise and to focus on the "delta", which is far more important than the value itself. Our minds will zero out pretty much any value not showing fluctuation. That's our hunter-algorhythm ;-)
It's an easy way to detect someone lying to you, too!: Establish the baseline of behavior, independently from what it is (calm, nervous, distracted, whatever..), and any change in that state will indicate an escaping mind. If you're suspicious of someone, detect his or her baseline and leisurely pronounce a phrase containing the bequestioned keyword: If the baseline of that person changes, she's probably lying to you..

I read the boris b-rant in the chat, and I must say that it sounds all too familiar to me. Wouldn't want to judge before having met in person, though. I just don't really get the big difference between cleanflight and betaflight, except for esc-handling, which is a point, I must admit. I've looked into FC's, as I announced, and I must say that I'm not impressed with that notorious boris b-FC. Looks half-cooked to me, but I'm just a nooby newbie :-):-):-)
My Brutekong flew like a pregnant goose with the 3s/650mAh Lipo attached to it. Thrust was okay, but acro mode almost felt like auto-level because of the black hole attached to its bum. *lmao..
Guess I overcharged the whole story considerably. I had to pull myself back from adapting motor position and motors, "nooo, let's leave that, maybe it's better to go lighter, after all..!" That's what the lil'Kraken will be for.
Tried the Dalprop 6045 two-blades on the Helix today, and I love them! They're so silent&smooth!! Of course she still screams when throttling up, but when doing so after a little dive, it's like she's coming out of nowhere, *wheeehhhh...
Got the Aomway goggles today, too! *Lord, are they light & comfy! The design considers a lot of points that disturbed me with my second-hand HD3's, like batt choice&positioning, weight&comfort.. Haven't tried them yet as I absolutely wanted to get out & flying after work, but I'll give it a go with the Sim tonight. Looking very much forward to that. They're WAY more comfortable than the Fatsharks, I must say..
I'll do a comparison of the reception of those two, since the diversity-Rx is already built-in with Aomway (..*heck, another argument for them..) Just hope they can keep up with the True-D module.. and if not, no sweat, I got an external Diversity module some time ago, when I believed that I could connect up to the little diversity-box over a different channel. *heheehh.. I'll have to get some more flexible & longer cables, though..
Love this hobby so much, sorry for repeating. *what a priviledge!!
Love this forum too, great attitude and eye-level communication despite the differing degrees and fields of expertise - way to go!!
Have a good evening, everyone,
E
