Is this a good setup for the beginner?

This tells me that you will have to supply your own.  The opens your world of options.  For most of my builds, I have used the FrSky XM+ receiver with great results.  Inexpensive and easy to install, just three wires to connect.  It will allow you several hundred meters of range in dense cover and it provides RSSI.

The X7 will work perfectly with it as well.

As far as quad goes, it is a little dated. Running Cleanflight and oneshot. Probably won't make a difference though. Little under power to only have 12A ESCs. Price, too high.

I think it has integrated RX. Yeah, it's dated but oh well. Good start I think. Thanks for advise.

Which part of this sentence didn't you understand?

"NOTE: Compatible receiver and display device required for initial setup and during use, items not included."

You have to buy a compatible receiver!

Thanks. So receiver is the part that goes into the remote control unit?

The quad was 199 on sale, not bad.

THANK YOU, so much for responding. Would x9d plus work? So the receiver just gets intalled into x9d ?

Thanks

Another way to look at things, the RADIO is your Tx, or transmitter.  Anything to do with the RADIO, think of as TRANSMITTING and anything on the quad is RECEIVING. This is a huge oversimplification, but in terms of controlling your craft it is accurate.

With that established, you are doing nothing with the radio except binding it to a receiver.  That receiver is on the quad itself and plugged or soldered into one of the UART's.

This is a good video on setting up the XM+.  Do not worry about flashing it for right now, it will work on the old firmware, just RSSI will be missing.

Summary, you will be soldering the Receiver (Rx) to the flight controller on the quad.  You will then power up the quad with the bind button pressed.  Then you will start your radio (Tx) and put into BND.  This will link the two together.  At that point you can configure your MODES in Cleanflight and start to tune your aircraft.

Here is an example of how I have the Rx currently installed on my KT-110.  It is is the small green board that is visible.  I removed the shrink tube from it so you could see it better.

Generally, when you read that something "Bind and Fly" (BNF), the manufacturer is trying to tell you that the quad is ready to get off the ground as soon as you add your chosen Rx and bind it. No other assembly, other than antennas, props and battery should be needed. They are letting you know that they have done almost all of the assembly and sometimes the initial setup in the chosen configurator.

There is a language I have been learning in order to understand what I actually seeing out in Drone Land.

GREAT! I bought the receiver you suggested and the qx7 transmitter. I was confused as it is my first time doing this all and a learning curve is steep Smile

So, now I have

Goggles

Quad (battery and charger)

Tx (radio)

Receiver

Am I missing anything?

And I want to thank you for helping me out.

Batteries for quad. Charger. Soldering iron, solder, flux, misc tools, hex tools, extra props, extra props nuts... Let you know if I can think of something else.

If you will be flying FPV by yourself. One important things people don't really mention, DVR for the goggles if key. It allows you to locate your quad when you have a bad crash. When the lipo disconnect and the buzzer doesn't work. It has save my ass many times to review the video to see where you crashed. I have been totally off before when I forget to record. Just my suggestion.

You also buy a Loc8tor instead. Or have a spotter every time you fly.

Radio FrSky TARANIS Q X7 = $90 You need 6 AA batteries or a lipo pack for the radio. ($15)

Charger iSDT Q6 Plus = $45

Batteries Infinity 4S 14.8V 1300mAh = $22 (at least 2 the more the better.)

I like this list better. Maybe different lipo. For $19, I would go with indestructible lipo. Unseen always recommend them. I bought some, but haven't tried them yet. I am pretty sure they will be great considering a few guys here use them. I also have some CLN lipo. They have been pretty good for me. For $17 and even less now code BLACKFRIDAY.

Tiny Whoop!  I fly them in the house all the time and have yet to destroy anything...cannot say that regarding Lizzy.

They are low initial investment and the ducted design protects the props well.
