Is BLHeli_S better than standard BLHeli?
#1
Does anyone know what the actual deal is with the BLHeli_S ?

I have seen lots of reports of problems with them as well, like reboots in flight and desyncs, issues tuning, hot motors etc.. I have also heard DYS and EMax recalled theirs for the reboot issue.

Is this just poor quality hardware that made it into the first batches or should we avoid jumping on the train for a bit?

BLHeli_S is the "go to ESC" now. I was sceptical of how much improvement there would be between the Aikon 30A _S ESCs and the XM-20A I was using already, but it's actually quite different after i've used them. BLHeli_S is much more responsive, smoother, better active braking and a noticeable improvement in overall thrust.

It's brand new tech so it will have issues. The DYS 30a, aikon sefm and cicada have no issues.

Motors getting hot is because everyone is used to having high p and d. I have no issues with aikon no death flips motors run warm just like regular blheli. They run so smooth and you have very low pid numbers

blheli_s hardware were rushed by companies to be the first and to be the most sold one on the market. That is the issue, we have to wait a little more.

No issues here on Aikon's.

Basically the BB2 is a drop in replacement for the SiLabs - but it's also way more sensitive to voltage drops - with braking enabled it's dropping the voltage enough to cause a CPU reset. New firmware update with longer dead time between switching phases solved the reboot issue on the XS20A. The problem with a lot of this stuff is that it only shows up when it gets out there in the wild on a wide variety of setups. It's hard to test all possible contingencies.
