Introducing myself and my Diatone Tyrant 150
#61
At last I've got the CC3D FC to connect to Betaflight. After trying a number of methods I finally got it to work through Libreflight, without needing to jump the boot loader terminals. Libraflight puts you into boot loader mode (blue LED off) automatically and then you can load Betaflight.

I suppose I could now program the quad in Libraflight, but as I'm learning Betaflight/Cleanflight I thought I'd stick to those. At the moment it still won't connect to Cleanflight which says I need to mess about in the CLI or install an older version of Cleanflight. For now I'm sticking with Betaflight because it works and I'm concerned I'll stuff it all up again if I mess about anymore! These flight controllers sure aren't plug and play, but I suppose you wouldn't get such a strong sense of achievement and relief if it wasn't such a hassle. The price of entry to an esoteric hobby.

Now it's time to get the receiver channels operating correctly and program the modes and arming. With luck I'll get it off the ground today.

Hi Tom BD Bad. Unfortunately it's not going smoothly.

I just can't get the receiver channels to make sense. You got me going with the Tyrant and I've copied everything we did there. I have Receiver mode set to PWM 1 wire per channel, but whatever order I plug in the wires to the RX I just can't get the right channels working. I've tried them in order out of the FC and into the RX as I have them in the Tyrant. I've tried them as it says in the CC3D Flight Controller Guide, going to EATR12. Each of those setups gives totally the wrong stick responses. I've tried swapping plugs around to chase the stick inputs but the closest I've got is to get throttle and yaw on the left stick (I'm mode2), but when I tried to get the other plugs in the right places I lost the left stick settings again despite not changing those plugs.

I've been doing this for 2 days and I'm tearing my hair out. I thought after setting up two other models it would make more sense but it doesn't. I'm not sure whether I'm unlucky, stupid, or have picked the wrong hobby. Possibly all three. The only thing that gives me hope is that I felt this way half way through setting up both the Tyrant and the QX65 and both of those are in the air now. Which raises the question, why was I so stupid to buy another one?

What radio are you using? If you are on the FrSky protocol, TAER. It does not make a lot of sense when opening the drop down menu as it does not list FrSky as compatible with that layout...but it is. Just a thought...

OMG, no one told me it would be this much fun!  Addicted :)

You are still using the Spektrum DX7 right? I would say maybe just get another RX, preferably with PPM or DSMX serial protocol, and just use 1 wire, less points to fail. I understand that replacing a Spektrum RX is more expensive than the $5-$15 for one of my FlySky RX's though.

My FlySky TX has the option to reverse the stick inputs, I had to do this to get the Velocidrone sim working. Maybe you have managed to get the right channels, just in the wrong direction..?

I know well how you feel, every time I solder I worry something is going to burn when I provide power. I killed my 1st brushed micro scratch build, (like you, I didn't understand the configuration  procedure for the RX) so I re-soldered it and when I plugged it back in to the USB, I got flames!

I just soldered an RX onto a quad today (still bloody waiting on batteries for it), set up with failsafe working in about 5 mins on Betaflight, using a single wire serial connection is just so much simpler.

Sorry I can't be more help man, but I have never used a PWM receiver.

Hi Kaitylynn, I'm on Spektrum, using a rather old but trusty DX7S transmitter and various DSM2 and DSMX receivers salvaged from old planes. The same gear I use for the Diatone Tyrant and the Eachine QX65 (the TX at least). I thought after finally setting those up with help from this forum I would be able to work it out for myself this time with a Spedix S250Q. But no, despite having the same problems, the answers don't seem the same.

Hi TomBDBad, thanks for the encouragement and empathy. It helps, even if the answers aren't there. I did a STATUS check in the CLI but there was no reference to ARMING or THROTTLE in that. All seemed okay.

After exhaustively trying every combination of wiring I've finally got 5 channels operating correctly on the RECEIVER tab in Betaflight. On my other quads my GEAR switch is on AUX1 and arms the quad. My 3-way FLAPS switch changes flight modes. But with this setup I can't get the GEAR switch to operate at all and the FLAPS are on AUX1. I've tried two different RX. Maybe the wire from the FC is faulty.

I've decided to live with this and make it all work on the one switch. Pos1 - DISARM (& ANGLE); Pos2 - ARM & ANGLE; Pos3 - ARM & HORIZON. The ANGLE & HORIZON modes light up correctly when I flip the switch, but ARM does not. I had a similar problem with the QX65, but so far I can't find what's wrong with this one. I either can't remember how I fixed the QX65, or I'm missing something somewhere. It was something to do with throttle travel, but all the figures look right to me. Hopefully it'll leap out at me soon.

Two steps forward, one step back. That's how it seems with this Spedix S250Q. I've finally got it to arm by carefully copying all the Clearflight settings of the QX65 into Betaflight for the Spedix. It was probably because I hadn't lowered the throttle to 1000 in the RECEIVER tab. Anyway, ARM comes on in the MODES tab when my 3-way switch is in the middle and third positions.

BUT, the motors don't start up at all! Despite the quad now arming, nothing happens when I raise the throttle. Nothing happens in the MOTORS tab either. I've checked that there is 12v coming out of the PDB where the motors are plugged in. The ESCs glow and beep when powered up.

I've tested each motor/ESC with a servo tester and they all run, just not when plugged into the FC.

I'm wondering about ESC protocols. Apparently these Spedix round ESCs are flashed with SimonK, but that doesn't appear in the ESC protocol list on Betaflight and I've not been able to find out whether SimonK conforms with any that are listed. I've tried to change it to see what happens but after I save and reboot it always defaults to PWM when I return to the CONFIGURATION tab.

I'm really stumped at this point.

PWM should work whether you have SimonK or BLHELI. Motor tabs should spin the motors. Did you click the toggle to spin motors?

This Spedix S250Q kit really is driving me mad. After reaching a dead stop with the supplied CC3D flight controller I abandoned it and started again with a new EMAX Skyline 32 Advanced. Now I can't work out how to power it up. I've connected the VBat to the 12v supply from the PDB but it doesn't power up. It does power up from the USB cable, but that doesn't supply power to the receiver despite me plugging in the 3-wire plug into the AIL socket.

I'm about to junk the whole thing and return to foam planes!

You have to connect 5v supply and ground to any 5v and ground on FC. The VBAT is only for lipo sense reading.

Thanks voodoo, you prompted me back into action.

After considering soldering wires onto the back of the FC I tried running 5v from the PDB straight to the BAT plugs on the RX. Bingo! This also powered the FC.

I don't know where I went wrong with the CC3D FC, but I never got the motors to run. With this Skyline FC the motors run fine. I'm in the air!

Hi good people on this forum.

I received a lot of kind and useful help last year getting me started with multi-rotors and I've been having a lot of fun.

Now my tired old Spectrum DX7s is falling apart I've taken the plunge with Open TX and have bought a Taranis X-Lite with an iRX4 multi-protocol module to replace it. As all my planes and most of my multi-rotors have DSM2 and DSMX receivers, I thought I'd start with the simplest one and try to bind with my Blade Inductrix. Following Youtube videos I've installed Open TX 2.2 and can bind with the Inductrix, but nothing happens. This quad operates without Betaflight and has no arming switches on my Spectrum, but I can't get it to respond to the Taranis, despite saying it's bound. That's not quite true, because at one stage of my fiddling it suddenly powered up and shot off out of control. I suspect it is something to do with throttle setting, but reversing the throttle made no difference, and I haven't got the Inductrix to respond since, despite it apparently binding. (The TX announces, "telemetry lost, telemetry restored" when I switch it on and off.)

I was hoping if I could get the Inductrix to bind successfully, all my other stuff would work too, but maybe that's naive...

I've been trying to find a simple, introductory lesson in Open TX, without getting into all the complications, but haven't found one.

Cheers, Andrew
