ImpulseRC Helix Frame
#1
After the success of the Alien frame and Warpquad, ImpulseRC are releasing a new frame called 'Helix'.

This new frame is a true x style and very compact compared to previous frames, as the centre measures just 34mm across.

Two different sizes are being released the ZX5 and the ZX6, as the names suggest one is 5 inch and the other 6 inch. The ZX5 is 200mm motor to motor and the ZX6 is 230mm motor to motor.

Injection moulded plastic fairings protect the ESCs on the underside of the arms.

The Helix also includes a combined flight controller and PDB along with full support for 6S batteries.

ZX5 Spec
  • Weight – 58grams
  • Propeller Size – 5 inches
  • Diameter – 200mm
  • Arm Thickness – 4mm
ZX6 Spec
  • Weight – 62grams
  • Propeller Size – 6 inches
  • Diameter – 230mm
  • Arm Thickness – 4mm
Recommended Electronics
  • FPV camera - HS1177 (top connector) or Runcam Swift/Owl
  • RC receiver - No larger than FrSky X4R-SB
  • FPV antenna - TBS Triumph
  • Motors - 2204-2206 class motors to suit prop size
  • ESCs - Aikon 30A or Littlebee 20A
Expected shipping date is 9th September 2016 and prices start at $199

The impulseRC website is a bit confusing... so the kit comes with electronics includes the VTX, F3 FC (PDB integrated), LED, and OSD?

It looks that way. In the recommended electronics it doesn't mention a VTX or flight controller so I presume it's included with the frame.

This thing definitely seems strange to me. It's almost a pre-built "RTF" quad, but is targeted at the crowd that usually espouses building your own quad.

Also, looking at it, it seems like the VTX is structural, with the camera mount sitting on top of it and supporting it's weight in any crashes. Seems like this thing couldn't possibly be durable in the long run.

That's exactly what I thought, plus you're limited to the electronics they offer so you can't just swap for a different FC or VTX if you're not satisfied.

Not sure how durable it would be especially with the extra weight of a GoPro attached to it.

A few flight videos are on Youtube.

Any arms less than 1cm wide can't take crashes I'm pretty sure. Maybe tubing will come back for those wants to race and gain any bits of speed available.

I might be the only one who says this, but I dont like it, the arms look weak, the pod looks weak, and from what I read the fpv cam is not fully adjustable, only has 3 or 4 presets for angle. I think my Armattan F1 Acro frames are better.. But that is just my view. and for $250 Australian , it is far too costly for what you really get.

I'll second this. While I think the design is sleek and sexy, it doesn't look durable in the long run. It does seem pretty pricey for what you get.

I agree with Biggles, I don't really like it. It looks to easy to break and its not very customizable which is really the whole point of this hobby.

Could I buy the electronics separately and then stick them in another frame?

you are correct Oscar the frame comes with FC, PDB, VTX w/OSD, and LEDs. a buddy of mine has one that he's building. maybe i can stop by his place and get some picture of it.

Edit: the plastic moldings that screw underneath the arms are there to house the ESCs, and add strength to the arms, but space is very limited. the kiss esc won't fit. and the tbs 25a bulletproof esc fit if you cut a little slot out but that might weaken the arm. so because of this you might be limited to which ESCs you can use.
