Ideal rates for racing?
#1
Hey Guys,

I'm hoping to get some feedback from some of you (specially the ones that race).  At the moment, my rates are set pretty high.  RC Rate 2, Rate .75 and RC Expo 0.  You can probably imagine that my quad is pretty twitchy.  The graphs are showing 1700 degrees per second.

Whenever I'm racing,  I'm finding that I'm only really using about 15-20% stick movement to navigate around the track.  It seems to me that I'm not really making good use of the range of the stick movement.

What rates are you guys using?  Are my rates too high for racing?  Will it be easier to fly through gates if I lowered my rates?

Thanks!

this is kind of a trick question. you're going to have to just try different settings out to see what feels right for you. a couple of weeks ago we were racing, and a buddy's of mine asked me to fly his quad. he had his rates set really low, but was navigating the track fine. i prefer a little higher rate with a little more expo.

Agree with Jimmy on this. What is "Ideal" for you in all probability will not be for other folks. Depends in the track, the person flying and the individual quad you're dealing with. Whatever feels good to YOU are your ideal settings.

I have thought about this, and I think it has to be looked at on a case by case basis.

I have pretty high rates and quite a bit of curve on them, which means for acro I can be as smooth as possible with small adjustments, but then be able to flip/roll as fast as possible. I also tried lowering rates and flattening the curve for racing, based on the idea that I could react with larger stick movements and not have the lack of precision when doing fast turns etc. Interestingly, while I did get used to lower rates for racing with, I am no faster than when running high rates. Thinking

So I just run my "acro" rates for everything, and when racing having the twitchier rates just forces me to be more precise and controlled, which I think can only be good for my flying Smile

Just my experience, everyone has to just experiment and find what they like in terms of rates

Thanks for the insight.  That's the same thing as what I was wondering about.  I like flying with twitchy settings,  I guess I just thought that sometimes with the smallest margin of error, you can totally mess up your line.  I thought I'd be able to fly more accurately if I lowered it a touch.  I'm going to try flying at 1200degrees per second and see how that goes.

Out of curiosity, pinch or thumbs?

Thing is, you'll have to compensate for that - move sticks further, and faster (which could introduce more error).
Personally i just had the experience that it irritates me more if i notice i have to push the stick further than i thought, compared to when the quad feels "light" on the sticks.

I'm on thumbs. I also agree with having to push the sticks too much. I just want that fine balance of sticking to the control and not being overly twitchy. Maybe I should add some rc expo

Just to follow up with this. I ended up lowering my rates to 1.25 from 2. I find it much easier to navigate around the track now.
