I've hit my hardwares limit. Where too now?
#1
As the title suggests I have again hit the limit of what my equipment's capabilities are. This time it is a range issue.

I am running a Spektrum DX6 radio so basically a park flier. This is a great radio and technically I only fly parks but some of the parks in my area are very big.

Yesterday I figured i'd test out failsafe and see just how far my quad can fly. I don't have RSSI working so went that's cool i'l fly low and slow. Long story short got out to where I wanted to, say 500m went all is good so started just flying around. Ended up going out of range at a much higher speed and height. End result a broken damn it go back home to the work bench for repairs type of crash.

Great so I now know this setups limits but I want more. Here is one of the places I would like to fly at and where I killed my drone. Basically if you do the full circle I want to be able to buzz along the tops of the hills surrounding me. Couple of k's in any direction I guess.

I don't have any limits set so am open to all suggestions. Heck if I have to have a second drone acting as a repeater following the main drone around I would seriously consider it or at least make that the final goal.  Licensing laws whatever no issues as I am happy to do whatever course or get whatever licenses I have too.

I don't at this point though want to spend a gazillion dollars so really want something I can work up too with the in between bits keeping me going until getting there.

If you want more range, you will have to get a 900mhz system. So either TBS Crossfire or Frsky R9. But you will have to switch to different transmitter.

As a cheap option to extending the range, you can mod your DX6 and fit an 8dbi antenna. It is said to increase your range by up to 50% but take that with a pinch of salt and do some careful range tests.

You can fit the TBS Crossfire system to a Spektrum transmitter using PPM over the trainer port. The latency is a bit higher but it sounds like for the sort of flying you are planning to do, this would still be acceptable...

Or finally, the more expensive option of a complete new FrSky transmitter plus either the R9 or Crossfire system fitted as already mentioned by Voodoo.

TBS Crossfire looks much easier to understand Smile

So if I get the TBS Crossfire Micro Starter Set and a Taranis x9d

It will do this or even a couple of k's would be awesome
