So here it is. Just a quick run-down on how to correct yaw drift issue. Steps apply to CleanFlight and BetaFlight-enabled FCs. Here ya go!
This is the summary of a quick write-up that I did for folks very new to CF or tuning/adjusting quad settings entirely, so please forgive the layman's terms throughout!
NOTE- Before performing the below mentioned steps in CleanFlight, make sure the issue is not mechanical. Many frames have a tendency to twist. Set the quad on a flat surface, loosen all of the top plate screws and then tighten them back down in the same "X pattern" you would use when changing a tire on a car.
Inspect the motor mounts from a "side on" view to ensure that each is aligned flush with the top plate and not twisted slightly forward or backward. You will know that the quad is mechanically straight if all 4 feet/arms/whatever your bottom contact point is sit flush on a flat surface without wobbling from any corner. Once you have done this, connect your quad to CF and follow the steps below.
1. Make sure all of the sub trims on your radio are centered and navigate to the Receiver tab. Make a note of the center readings for Roll and Pitch (mine are at approximately 1504) and then look at Yaw. You will notice immediately that the Yaw center reading is way higher or lower than the rest of your center readings. In my case, Yaw showed centered at 1476!
Trimming in CF is OK. It's 'syncing' your radio and FC. You can also set some deadband on yaw in CLI as well. Maybe 10, to stop the yaw drift on hovering.
2. To adjust this setting, the most reliable method I have found is as follows: In CleanFlight, navigate to the CLI tab *making absolutely sure all props are removed!* and type the following command:
set mid_rc=1504
Press Enter, then type "save" (no quotes) to confirm the change. Your number there will vary based on your Pitch/Roll center figures. Again, mine showed 1504.
3. Navigate back to the Receiver tab after your FC reboots and your quad is reconnected. You will now see the Yaw center point much more in the neighborhood of the rest of your center points.
4. To finalize the adjustment, use the Yaw sub trim on your radio to hit the final number. You can see the changes occur in real time if you are still connected to CF.
Voila! Clean, balanced center points and no more Yaw drift!
